Altec Lansing IML247 Orbit USB stereo

Altec Lansing already offered a single housing monaural speaker in its Orbit line of portable speakers. But now it's doubled up with the latest model, the Orbit Stereo--a pair of USB-powered speakers that snap together into one long tube when not in...

The Altec Lansing Orbit Stereo IML247 PC speakers snap together for travel, cost less than $50, have a single USB cord for power and audio, and play louder and sound significantly better than the internal speakers on most laptops.

The speakers sound crunchy (distort) at higher volumes and the bass is pretty thin. There's no volume control on the speakers. And the lack of a 3.5mm input means that you can't use these with any non PC/Mac audio devices, such as an iPod or smartphone.

While the sound quality of the Altec Lansing Orbit Stereo speakers isn't likely to blow you away, the travel-friendly and affordable USB speakers do sound significantly better than the internal audio found on most laptops.

Altec Lansing Orbit USB Stereo Speakers Review →

The Altec Lansing Orbit USB speakers offer a great sounding set of drivers producing very dynamic sound that sets itself apart from the competition, but come just a bit short in terms of streamlining the user experience.

Very well built ; Very good sound quality in general ; Fantastic price ; Easy to deploy

Difficult to clean up ; Slightly congested sound ; Limited to being USB speakers

The majority of the speakers that are built into laptops are not very good, which is why consumer audio companies continue to come out with speakers for those of us who are sick of hearing our music played out of the tinny stock ones. The problems with...

Look ma, no power cable. USB speakers for laptop-wielding travellers.

Decent sound quality ; Great build ; Good value

Bulkier than all-in-one options

Smaller and more convenient USB-powered speakers are out there at the same price, but few match the sound quality offered by the Altec Lansing Orbit USB Stereo pair. They won't turn your laptop into something to rival a home stereo, but for watching...

Altec Lansing Orbit USB review

Altec Lansing's Orbit USB is a portable speaker designed for laptops. The captive USB cable provides power and a connection for the built-in sound card. Unfortunately, there's no 3.5mm input for MP3 players.

The Orbit USB's sound quality is poor compared to similarly priced and sized alternatives.

One aspect of a laptop or netbook that often gets ignored is that of audio output with speakers that do not enhance your listening pleasure.

Opening the box reveals two cylindrical speaker units individually wrapped, a soft carry pouch with a drawstring fastener plus a couple of sheets of documentation. Rather than brief set up instructions, this documentation deals with warranty issues –...

Review: Altec Lansing Orbit USB Stereo 2.0 speakers

Is it possible to get great sound from add-on speakers for a laptop while also having portability ... and good design? We put Altec Lansing's to the test

All against: honestly? nothing.

These speakers did in fact blow me away.

These are great speakers that will work for any 3.5 mm jack if you can supply power. They are great for small rooms and personal listening. Very portable. Also they feel well built and not "cheap". Updated on Sep 17, 2011

I found CNET's review to be harsh and inaccurate. These speakers are very portable and have amazing sound quality. I did not experiance and scratchy sound at higher volumes and for a device with no "sub" it has really good bass support. There is no AUX po

At the moment I can't find any cons other than if you plug the USB in one port on your computer, it will have to reinstall the drivers for each USB port

Altec Lansing Orbit USB iML237

The sound in the speaker we got (maybe it was defective) was surprisingly disappointing for the price.

My husband LOVED that it was just one tiny little thing, and he hates cords, and he loves a clean desk. So this was perfect for him in that respect

I couldn't handle the sound at all. It just sounded tinny and somehow harsh. This one went back to the store and has been replaced by great sounding speakers at two-thirds the price
