Topfield TF5800

The TF5800 is the most expensive player on test and the Topfield brand has an army of diehard fans behind it proclaiming the brilliance of their PVRs. But is it worth the extra money and does it live up to its owners' enthusiastic praise?

Solid build; fully customisable; great picture quality; tonnes of options

Expensively priced; disappointing EPG

I bought this Topfield TF5800 PVR 250GB - Black finish to replace a Sony DVD/HD recorder that only has an analogue tuner. Good points: It can record two programmes simultaneously whilst playing back another or even watching a third programme provided...

Not as good as it could be

Not as good as it could be

I recommended this PVR to a friend after reading the reviews on Amazon. I agree that it's a neat machine with a lot of features and so far has worked well without a problem. However, in my opinion there is one BIG drawback. When you check to see what...

Topfield?? Top Banana In our House!

We have had this unit since mid November 08 and the whole family love it! It must have one of the best tuners inside as we have never had good reception on freeview up to now. The picture is Crystal clear and it was kids stuff to set up! Between us all...

I bought this to replace a PACE Twin Digital TV Recorder that being one of the first of this type of recorder only managed around 10 hours of recording, plumped for the TOPFIELD LIMITED EDITION cos it looked so good and had good reviews, I have now had...

Not with a bargepole

Not with a bargepole

Although it has a reputation as a box which 'can be as complicated as you want', frankly it's just complicated. Just getting BBC 1, 2 and Channels 4&5 to show in the logical places on the EPG (i.e. 1,2,4,5!) took a couple of hours and several firmware...

If you can work a PC, this is the best PVR on the market

Out of the box, this probably isn't a PVR to compete with the best of the rest because the UI and feature set is decidedly below par. BUT (and that's a big but) you can replace the UI, replace the firmware and add all sorts of features - just by...

Poor software

The Topfield has a bug which wipes and/or corrupts program recordings at random. This bug has been reported by other users since at least March 2005 but so far Topfield have done nothing to fix it. If you've saved a complete series be warned that you...

Enter the Rolls Royce of PVR

What can I say? Well, it's very expensive (come on man, it is). But you get what you pay for in this world. Not only does this thing work amazingly well, it also looks classy and just, well, works. It does everything it's supposed to do without a...
