As a full-fledged game, Sonic Frontiers has its ups and downs. As an experiment, though? Sonic Frontiers is much better than it has to be, and it successfully carves a path forward for the beloved blue hedgehog.

Sonic Frontiers review: A baffling mixed bag

The latest 3D Sonic game is a weird mixture of genres - when it works, it's fun, but there are some odd moments too.

Fun stages ; Exploring the open world can be rewarding ; Visual variety

Ropey combat ; Really weird shifts in tone ; Graphical quality is middling

Sonic Frontiers is a bizarre melange that comes together in moments but falls apart in others. For series fans, it's worth checking out, but we don't see it convincing many new players.
