How To Buy the Right GPS

LG Electronics, a company probably best known for its mobile phones, flat-panel displays, and high-end home appliances, previewed a new line of portable navigation devices (PNDs) at CES in January. I was lucky enough to check out the company's current...

Large 4-inch screen. Supports text-to-speech conversion in three languages. Built-in traffic receiver. Able to do multisegment routing. Estimated 6-hour battery life.

No audible turn indicator. POI menu awkward to maneuver. Map view doesn't display speed. Separate TMC antenna makes for a messy-looking dashboard.

Chances are you didn't know that LG makes GPS devices, but if live traffic updates are important to you, the combination of a built-in TMC receiver, a big 4-inch screen, and text-to-speech conversion makes the LG LN740 a nice value.

LG LN740 GPS Receiver

Design With its sleek, black-lacquered finish and compact size (4.5-inches wide by 3.5-inches high by 0.7-inch deep; 7 ounces), the LG Portable Navigator LN740 is a good-looking portable navigation system. The GPS receiver is integrated into the...

The LG Portable Navigator LN740 is compactly built, sports a large screen, and comes with a number of accessories. The portable navigation system features text-to-speech functionality, a strong receiver, and also includes a free trial to Navteq's...

The LN740's low-resolution screen displays weak colors and appears washed out. It also lacks integrated Bluetooth functionality, which can be found in many other competing products. The device's speakers are weak.

The LG Portable Navigator LN740 is a good first effort from the company. Yet considering its low-resolution screen and lack of Bluetooth, you could definitely get more for your money with competing systems.

Review: LG LN740 Portable Navigation Device

You may know LG as a brand of LCD and plasma TVs and cell phones. Now LG wants you know its name as a maker of GPS navigation systems. Given the rise in popularity of portable nav systems this year, it's not surprising that lots of companies are giving...

When you don't need the unit to tell you where to go, you can use it as an MP3 player or a digital photo viewer via the SD card slot. It's better as a photo viewer than as an MP3 player because it doesn't broadcast the audio to an FM channel or include...

LG Portable Navigator LN740 Review

LG's new GPS line looked more promising than most, as the deep-pocketed company spent big bucks developing their own hardware & software rather than outsourcing both to the lowest bidders. Can LG compete with Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom in the...

"Very poor product! Map outdated, very poor tech support"

Bottom line! Not worth the money. Buy Tom Tom or Gramin hands down.

Over all face size decent

No updates. Tech support gave me 4 different answers when asked about prod. updates. Map way out of date. Voice signals too low. Colour screens far too faded.

"Unit is decent w/ annoying SW bug. Cust. service sucks"

Stay with the brand name, avoid new comer like LG.

Quick rerouting and map is pretty up to date. Graphic is decent with different view mode.

Software bug keeps pronouncing NE (Northeast) of any street as "Nebraska". Called customer service and was told to send the unit in with $ 45 check to have LG look at it. Huh? I have to pay $ 45 to have LG fix the defect ? I guess this is my last LG
