Audiolab's new CD player ups the ante with a host of technological innovations

Excellent detail, neutrality and communication ; Good build quality ; Decent price

No SACD support ; Slightly unprepossessing display

Audiolab 8200CD - £700

Audiolab's superb 8200CD gets new filter options and internal upgrades: Richard Black reckons its value remains unbeaten

Energetic sound with precise imaging and new insights into familiar tracks

Rather slow seek function

A cracking CD player and DAC that looks great, does lots and sounds fantastic

Audiolab 8200CD review

The Audiolab 8200CD is more than just a CD player - it offers a choice of digital audio inputs, including a USB port to let a PC play its sound through the Audiolab's high-spec digital-to-analogue converter.

The Audiolab 8200CD is a most versatile CD player, and ideal as a primary digital source component in a modern hi-fi system. The extra inputs extend the player’s span to take in almost any other digital product you may have in your living room too. A...

Delivering a very capable sound at a competitive price, the 8200CD will sit pretty with any music fan

Clean, neutrally toned sound ; Exciting performer ; Abundance of useful features ; Fine build ; Competitive price

Not as dynamically precise or driven as pricier competitors

Before being knocked off the top spot by the Naim CD5si last summer, the 8200CD outshone all other players in – and in some cases, above – its price range for years. And it remains a superb player.

Audiolab 8200CD

I'm by no means an audio/hi-fi expert but I have noticed a big difference in quality between the 8200 and the 8000 that I just sold . Very crisp clear sound . I love the chassis design and the remote control feels great . Overall I'm very happy

Cost me an arm and a leg . Hopefully it'll last me 20 years or so
