Panasonic SC-BT230 Blu-ray Home Theater in a Box (HTiB)Review

Panasonic's latest entry in the budget Blu-ray home theater in a box category packs a punch for remarkably little coin.

The system's integrated iPod/iPhone dock makes enjoyment of your portable media collection on the big screen (and with big sound) a fairly simple matter, though it will require one additional video cable if you want to watch iPod content on your...

Panasonic SC-BT230 review

All-in-one systems are home cinema's answer to a takeaway. Sure you could spend ages buying all the ingredients separately and seeing how they taste together, but sometimes all you want to do is buy it, take it home and get stuck right in.

Networking features, good multimedia support, excellent picture quality, easy to use

Expensive, especially when you add optional extras, sound quality lacks oomph and finesse, no HDMI inputs or built-in Wi-Fi, Viera Cast’s comparatively limited content

A convenient Blu-ray system with lots of features, but sound quality lets the side down and the £450 price tag seems remarkably expensive for a system that lacks built-in Wi-Fi and HDMI inputs

How well does this compact feature-rich Blu-ray home cinema system perform?

Still, at least there are two optical digital audio inputs and analogue phonos to take advantage of, as well as HDMI and composite video outputs, an Ethernet port for wired connection to the Web and a second USB port.

Panasonic SC-BT230 review

If you've been hankering for a Blu-ray player and surround-sound system, but don't really have the room or money to buy separates, the Panasonic SC-BT230 could well be what you're after. It's an all-in-one Blu-ray player and 5.1 surround-sound system,...

It's packed full of features and supports all of the latest sound and image standards, but the surround-sound is a little flat and underwhelming.

Panasonic SC-BT230

As the price of flat panel TVs fall, consumers are looking to invest additional dollars in the latest home theatre technology in an effort to boost their sound and movie experience. Among the new offerings is the compact Panasonic SC-BT230 which is...

Range of features; Excellent picture quality; Ease of use

The system boots up very quickly but sadly it takes us back to the disc loading dark ages; The overall sound is thinner than we'd hoped

Really good for the price.

It's a great starter system for someone who doesn't have a lot of money or room.

Compact, and perfect for what I need now. The 2 optical inputs are great for my PS3 and Xbox, and it doesn't create another path for my HDMI to pass through and possibly lose resolution. The speakers are clear and the Sub is pretty loud for its size

Although it's great for what I have now, It doesn't leave much to add in the future. I also wish it had a front panel USB and the ability to play AVI,MPEG4, and other video files I have on my computer

Not bad for $250

This HTIB replaced my 3 year old BD-30 player connected to 50" Panasonic plasma TV. VIERA link allows Panasonic TV to control the HTIB thru HDMI CEC connection. Forward facing only "sound bar" mode allows 5.1 sound, while not having to run wires or use...

Cheap, front facing "soundbar" mode, VIERA link, ipod dock, netflix

No HDMI inputs, smallish speakers, no WiFi, VIERA cast selection

Slow starting. Quit playing DVDs after 1 year.

After owning this system for 1 year, (long enough for the warranty to run out), it will not play DVDs at all any more, and I have to ship it off to get it fixed at my expense. I'm currently looking for another brand blu-ray/home theater player to...

Package deal. Surround sound is decent. Easy set up. Cost

Sound could be better

Not happy at all

For the amount I paid, I was expecting an excellent sound system. But, I was wrong. For a couple of days it worked fine. Then I noticed that the unit would shut-off randomly as I was watching TV. Also, the blu-ray player sometimes takes time to play...

Good packing

Slow start, occasional shut-off

Product Specifications

The SC-BT230 is compatible with a new feature of ARC (Audio Return Channel). ARC allows receiving audio signals from the TV, on top of the preexisting HDMI function of sending audio/video signals to the TV with just one cable. This feature will simplify the connection by eliminating an audio cable connection between the TV audio output and the main unit's audio input. By using a combination of real speakers and virtual speakers, a more natural and smoother sound can be enjoyed. You'll notice the difference, epecially in an action scene - you'll feel like you're sitting in the center of a true cinema theater.
