HP SlateBook 14 review: Android? On a laptop?

Even with a crisp display and comfortable keyboard, the SlateBook 14 doesn't have enough to recommend it. With an operating system that was never meant to be used on a laptop, it's a poor choice compared to less-expensive Windows laptops and Chromebooks.

Good battery life ; Sharp display ; Comfortable keyboard, generally good build quality

Android is awkward to use with a mouse ; Polarizing design ; Heavy compared to an Android tablet with a keyboard dock ; A poor value versus Chromebooks or Windows laptops

The SlateBook is an interesting specimen. That's why I wanted to review it: because I was curious about the idea of an Android laptop, and thought you might be too. And it is interesting. But by no means should you actually buy one. The SlateBook takes...

HP SlateBook 14-p010nr

The HP SlateBook 14-p010nr is a $429 Nvidia Tegra 4-equipped Android OS laptop. But when $300 will get you a fully functional Chromebook, and $450 is a prime price for a Windows notebook, we're not sure there's a real need for it.

1080p screen. Full-size keyboard and touchpad. Nine hours of battery life.

Only 11GB onboard storage is free after setup. Mobile apps look comically large on the 1080p screen. Websites default to mobile versions. Pricey compared with Chromebooks.

Thus, the SlateBook 14 is neither a competent laptop nor a serviceable Android device. If you want a laptop experience on an Android-equipped device, go with the Asus Transformer Pad TF103C, which costs $299 and comes with a detachable keyboard dock....

HP Slatebook 14 Review: Android on a Notebook Disappionts

The idea of running Android on a Notebook computer seems enticing. But in the case of the HP Slatebook 14, it turns out to be disappointing. HP took their popular HP Chromebook 14 hardware and jazzed it up with a cool new black and schoolbus-yellow...

The HP originally priced the Slatebook 14 at $399.99, but HP released it for $429.99. It’s hard to recommend this machine at either price.

Good but could be better

Love having a touch screen and keyboard. Wish the keyboard was back lit and the battery life longer. Very lightweight and attractive looking. It's just like having my android phone but in laptop form. Wish I could get Sky Go on it though! Excellent...
