Archos AV700

The Archos AV700 is a biggest-of-breed portable digital video recorder, with a huge (7-inch) screen.

Records video from analog sources. Excellent line-in audio recording. Sturdy feel. Big screen. Video playback is smooth and sharp on built-in screen and on TV. Good battery life. Replaceable battery.

No calendar or contacts features.

Huge screen; supports PlaysForSure audio and video; wide viewing angle; records audio and video from external sources; can record TV at scheduled times; excellent battery life, especially for audio only; includes kickstand; iTunes plug-in for Mac...

Expensive; screen looks grainy and washed out; wide-screen content hard to come by; no software CD included; video-conversion tools not optimized for the AV700.

Proof positive that bigger isn't always better, the Archos AV700 fails to make the most of its wide-screen LCD.

Archos AV300 review

Archos AV300

Plays and records audio and video; nice image quality; excellent user interface; wireless remote; interfaces with standard TVs and audio equipment; stores and displays digital photos; 80GB storage capacity.

Heavier and bulkier than hard drive-based MP3 players; no carrying case; you must convert most downloaded video to play it.

This fine portable entertainment device proves that you can take it all with you.

"Noooooo!" I screamed, as the delivery man wrested the package out of my tense grip. Alas, it was no use. He yanked it away from me, and now it would be taken back to its rightful owners. I sighed as I realized it was too late.

Enormous, super-bright screen ; USB Host Capability (!) ; Internal hard drive provides a huge amount of storage ; Simple, intuitive interface ; Elegant, lightweight design ; Provides video capture capability with good quality ; Can output to television...

Screen doesn't work well outside ; Screen has that odd matte look like past generation color BackBerry phones, which reduces the wow factor ; Device size, though impressively tiny considering the huge screen, is nonetheless a bit large for carrying...

Bulky, poor user controls, lack of double headphone jack, no wireless connectivity

The AV 700 is a true multimedia convergence device, but the sheer size of the unit makes it unsuitable for buyers who place a premium on portability.

The Archos AV700's huge screen should be the device's main selling point, but it fails to live up to its potential.
