B&O Play Beoplay M3 review: Sonos contender or just a pretender?

Could this be the long-awaited Sonos alternative?

Compact design ; Loud output without distortion ; Compatible with AirPlay, Google Cast, Bluetooth, and wired sources

Doesn’t sound great at extreme high or low volumes ; No voice control options at all ; Expensive price tag

Sonos contender or just a pretender?

B&O Play Beoplay M3

The B&O Play Beoplay M3 multi-room speaker delivers powerful bass for its size, sometimes at the expense of overall balance in the mix.

Rich bass response and powerful overall audio performance. Sleek, minimal design. Streams via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Bass can overwhelm mix at times, and digital signal processing can squash dynamics. No playback or track navigation controls.

The drivers inside the Beoplay M3 actually sound great—it's that DSP that becomes problematic at times. Many listeners will enjoy the rich bass response it brings out of mixes, but it isn't an accurate sound signature, and at high volumes, dynamics get...

B&O Beoplay M3 review: A small multi-room powerhouse

Bang & Olufsen's most affordable multi-room speaker is a strong value.

Rich, deep bass and a wide soundstage ; Supports Chromecast and Apple Play as well as Bluetooth ; Minimalistic design and solid build quality

Monaural speaker, you’ll need to buy a second M3 for stereo ; No Spotify Connect functionality ; Expensive compared to competing products

Thanks to the plethora of connection options, minimalistic design, and rich bass-heavy sound, the B&O Beoplay M3 is an excellent choice for anyone interested in building a multi-room speaker system for their home. But, as it’s more expensive than many...

Bang & Olufsen Beoplay M3 Review

The speaker had the highest audio quality during our tests.

It doesn’t have voice-control capability.

If you are serious about audio quality, the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay M3 is the best wireless speaker for less than $400.

B&O Beoplay M3

B&O Beoplay M3 review: Premium design and audio, plus some smarter features too, but it doesn't have a microphone for voice control.

Excellent sound quality ; Beautifully designed ; Spotify Connect, Google Cast and Apple AirPlay ; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connected

No built-in microphone for voice control ; Mono speaker only ; Expensive

A relatively pricey speaker that offers premium design and audio quality with decent connected features. It lacks stereo, however, and could benefit from a microphone for future-proofed voice controls.

B&O Beoplay M3 review

Sleek and simple multi-room

Spotify Connect, Google Cast, AirPlay and Bluetooth support ; Voice control via Google Home ; Looks great

Mono only ; Comparatively expensive

A great sounding mono speaker with support for every major streaming protocol, but it's a shame there's no stereo pair option.

B&O Beoplay M3 review

The B&O Beoplay M3 has premium Scandinavian styling, with blended lamb's wool or 'pearl blasted, anodized aluminium' interchangeable covers. It's also claimed to have 'rich and authentic Bang & Olufsen Signature Sound'. So did this speaker impress out...
