Performance

Sharp SD-HX500

Matching slim-line 5.1-channel receiver and DVD-Audio-Video/SACD player; table stands and all-metal wall-mounting brackets are included.

The sound falls flat.

Sharp's skinny receiver and DVD player combo unit is drop-dead gorgeous, but its sound quality could use a makeover.

Sharp SD-HX500 Digital AV Receiver and Universal Player

When Apple introduced the iPod, many industry observers scratched their heads, wondering why Sony hadn't been the first to deliver such a product. After all, Sony had invented the Walkman—the first speakerless, portable personal audio cassette player,...

Sharp SD-HX500 Digital AV Receiver and Universal Player

When Sharp Electronics unveiled its audacious line of 1-Bit digital AV receivers based on delta-sigma modulation amplifiers, each with a built-in, progressive-scan, universal DVD player, Sony again came to mind—and for good reason. These innovative...

Better sound and flexibility available elsewhere for the same price, but not in such a small, one-piece package

You can get equal or better sonic and visual performance from separate components for about the same price as Sharp's SD-HX500. Denon's new AVR-2805 7.1-channel receiver costs around $800; to it you could add Onkyo's new DV-SP502 universal player...

Receivers, Tuners, and Integrated Amps: DVD Receivers: Sharp SD-HX500

At $1199, Sharp's SD-HX500 is well priced, but certainly not inexpensive. I believe its natural competition will come in the form of packages comprising conventional AVRs (likely in the $500 range), standalone universal players (also in the $500 range)...

Consumer review (newegg.com)

It's not bad..

Overall, a quality product with some minor glitches.

The Combo deal from Newegg was great. Provides good 5.1 surround sound for my setup

Setup was a little awkward. Red is negative on the front speakers and positive on the center and back speakers. No HDMI ports, which kinda sucks as it was bundled with HDTV's. Doesn't always work well with my universal remote
