Sporting a 1 megapixel CCD and the relatively robust list of standard Canon features, their latest Mini-DV camcorder, the MD160, is another strong ent...

35x zoom, good video quality

Slightly dull colours

Another solid digital video camera from Canon, the MD160 will do all the things you'd expect of an entry level unit and do them well.

While HD camcorders stay north of £500 and DVD models offer poor compressed images and other inconveniences for Mac owners, the MiniDV tape format has life left in it. Canon makes good, cheap, reliable MiniDV camcorders and the MD160 continues to help...

Long zoom length, Good anti-shake software, Very easy to use, Great, unpretentious family camcorder

Doesn't like strong light, No accessory shoe or external mic port

Affordable, easy to use, no-frills camcorder that's ideal for filming the kids on days out

Good quality, easy to use, long zoom

Plastic body, no headphones/external mic

Easy controls ; 35x optical zoom ; Widescreen shooting

Still only an SD camera ; Some manual choices are slow

At AU$699, the MD represents acceptable but not stellar value if you're just starting out in the camcorder market. It is worth bearing in mind that similar models with DVD recording are available for only a slightly larger initial outlay -- even...

Good manual features, 16:9 widescreen, Excellent detail, Great value for money

No mic input

If money is a consideration, the MD160 provides the perfect compromise between quality and cost
