Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 ($699 as of May 15, 2007) is the high-definition model in the company's line of "digital media cameras," all of which record video and photos to an SD Card. Like the other models in the line, the 7.4-ounce VPC-HD2 is...

Small size ; High still-photo quality

Subpar video quality ; Few features and controls

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2

Although it's still chasing the competition, this tiny HD camcorder offers decent video capturing and still-image capabilities, all in one handy package.

Compact. Good color. Very good digital still images. Very portable.

Video quality could be better. Last year's nice OLED screen not on this year's model. Shutter lag evident in still shots. No optical-image stabilization.

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 review: Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2

Small and light design; can shoot stills and video at the same time

Soft, bland video quality; slow to focus; irritating control stick

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 fits high-def video and 7-megapixel stills into a very small package, but its image quality disappoints.

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2

The VPC-HD2 features a 7.1 Megapixel CCD, 10X optical zoom lens, a 2.2" rotating LCD display, full manual controls, and HDMI output. And did I mention the 720p movie mode that records stereo sound? If that sounds a lot like the PowerShot TX1, you're...

Good photo quality when ISO is kept to minimum ; 10X optical zoom lens ; Flip-out, rotating 2.2" LCD ; Top-notch movie mode: high definition 720p resolution with stereo sound, wind filter, and use of optical zoom; can take a still photo while recording...

Expensive ; Poor ergonomics: cramped buttons, lousy four-way controller, and difficult portrait shooting ; Noise reduction smudges details, even at ISO 50; images are soft compared to other ultra zooms ; No optical image stabilization ; Overall...

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 is one of those cameras that sounds great when you read the press release, but ultimately disappoints you when you use it. About the only things really going for it are the 720p video mode and HDMI out -- for just about...

Sanyo VPC-HD2

The VPC-HD2 records 720p "high definition video," a term with increasingly broad variances in interpretation. While there is certainly no false advertising in the statement, the camcorder adheres more to the letter of the definition than the spirit,...

In bright light, the VPC-HD2's video quality looked remarkably better than the first generation model, the VPC-HD1 - a small but happy point in its favor. Colors were saturated to a degree that most consumers will like. However, the camcorder had a...

Sanyo VPC-HD2

The Sanyo VPC-HD2 contains a single 1/2.5" CCD, the largest CCD of any consumer camcorder on the market. This is the same size as last year, but the pixel count has increased significantly, from 5.36MP to 7.38MP. Our suspicion last year was that the...

Sanyo VPC-HD2 review

Affordable and fun,but not worthy of calling itself HD

Light, portable ; Easy to use ; Cheapest HD cam on the market ; 7.1 megapixel digital stills

Difficult to differentiate between SD and HD pictures ; Poor positioning of microphone

Affordable and full of features, but its images fall well short of the quality we'd expect from an HD cam
