Sigma DP2 Merrill

The Sigma DP2 Merrill features a fixed standard-angle lens and is capable of producing some amazing photos—but you'll have to work with Raw files to get the most out of it.

Very sharp lens. APS-C Foveon image sensor. 45mm field of view. Sharp rear LCD. Improved JPG engine.

Cumbersome Raw workflow. No HD video support. No EVF option. Lens is a little slow for a 45mm design.

Sigma DP2 Merrill Review

The Sigma DP2 Merrill is a compact camera with a large APS-C sized sensor, as used in larger and heavier compact system camera and DSLR models and therefore promising better image quality than other compacts. The DP2 Merrill has the same 46 megapixel...

The Sigma DP2 Merrill is a slow, cumbersome, rather unrefined and expensive compact camera that's really only suited to static or slow-moving subjects. Despite all those major misgivings, the images that it produces thanks to the combination of the...

Sigma DP2 Merrill: Lab Test Results & Comments

The Sigma DP2 Merrill is dedicated to Dick Merrill (1949-2008), a photographer and engineer who developed/invented the Foveon sensor technology. The camera is based on former DP compact Sigma cameras, but uses the newest generation of the Foveon X3...

Sigma DP2 Merrill

Sigma's second fixed-lens compact camera features a 'standard' focal length and same three-layer Foveon sensor as Sigma's flagship SD1 DSLR camera.

Like its siblings, the DP2 Merrill is a highly specialised camera that will suit a limited audience. At ISO 100, the slowest shutter speed is 30 seconds, which makes this camera well suited to low-light photography and can yield some excellent sunset...

Sigma DP2 Merrill Review: Clumsy Body, Beautiful Sensor

Sigma is better known for its camera lenses than its cameras. But the company also makes a ridiculously strong imaging technology — the semi-legendary Foveon X3 image sensor. The Sigma DP2 Merrill is Sigma's latest attempt to mobilise this sensor in a...

Probably not. The DP2 and DP1 Merrill are Sigma’s second try at building a compact vehicle for a Foveon X3 sensor, and this camera still feels very much like a concept. The imaging technology is incredible, but the box it’s inside of isn’t quite there...

Sigma DP2 Merrill

Instead of a regular APS-C sensor, the Sigma DP2 Merrill adopts a Foveon X3 CMOS chip, which consists of three layers of photodiodes, each responding to different wavelengths of light.

The Sigma DP2 is admirably priced and produces sharp images, but is let down by poor Noise performance, and slow autofocus and write speeds.

Spectacular Results if you can use film

I use it outdoors to take pictures that could be printed at A0 of cities and landscapes. It\'s also amazing fun photographing everything in sight just to see what the pictures look like. Simply amazing. Of course it only works well at ISO 200 and has a...
