Hands-on: Sony DEV-5 Digital Recording Binoculars

Sony DEV-5 Digital Recording Binoculars Review

My experience with binoculars has mainly revolved around visits to motor sports, surf carnivals and performances like musicals or opera.

So I can, without fear of contradiction, say that we can safely discount use of the DEV-5 in theatres and the like: for one thing you’d quickly get tired of sitting it on your lap or wrapping it around your neck — it weighs over a kilo and is nearly...

Sony DEV-5 review

The Sony DEV-5 are digital binoculars that record 1080p video, 3D footage, and 7-megapixel stills.

Alas, these futuristic binos aren't cheap. Due to launch in November, the Sony DEV-5 will be priced at $2,000 (£1,250), while the DEV-3 will go for $1,400 (£850).

Works well for my purposes!

I got these because I am an optics enthusiast and into 3D, but I find that they are excellent for watching and taking records of wildlife. They start up quickly and are easy to use. My main complaint would be that they can't really be used in low light...

WOW-- great device

I have hesitated for months to acquire these because of the entry price. I was also concerned about these being rev 1, which means that I (and others who purchase the DEV-5’s) pays the refinement charge and have to purchase another unit when they get...

Sony DEV-5 Digital Recording Binoculars

Convenience of having binoculars, camcorder and digital camera in one unit.

Expensive. Image quality especially still photos using digital zoom. Lack of zoom when reviewing images. Lack of accessories like strap for case, HDMI cable and memory card.

Sony DEV-5 Digital Recording Binoculars

Fantastic to use, my preferred camera, very easy to track wildlife and comfortable on the eyes, video quality is excellent (try and avoid max digital zoom), zoom very powerful (in binocular use), 3D movies are excellent but time is needed to master...

When in photo mode digital zoom at max is absolutely useless, it looks like someone has painted the picture, I had difficulty getting the 3D to work, manual was a bit confusing, you can have a 3D viewfinder but that does not mean the camera will record...
