Verizon iPhone review

The Verizon iPhone 4 is an interesting product for Engadget to review. Firstly, it's not exactly a new device (not in any outwardly noticeable way).

Virgin Mobile offers the iPhone 4 contract-free

If the idea of signing a two-year contract for an iPhone makes you recoil, Virgin Mobile (expensively) offers the iPhone 4 with unlimited data and talk, commitment-free.

The ; offers all the usual iPhone features, plus mobile hot spot, without a contract.

Virgin's iPhone 4 data speeds are slower than AT&T's and Verizon's, and it lacks both world roaming and the ability to access voice and data simultaneously.

At a hefty cost, the Virgin Mobile iPhone 4 delivers an unlimited plan without a contract -- just don't expect blazing-fast data speeds.

When the first iPhone debuted in 2007, it and subsequent versions were only available on AT&T. Finally, in 2011, it landed on Verizon Wireless, with Sprint getting the iPhone 4 and 4S a year later.

The Virgin Mobile iPhone 4 offers all the usual iPhone features, plus mobile hot spot, without a contract.

Virgin's iPhone 4 data speeds are slower than AT&T's and Verizon's, and it lacks both world roaming and the ability to access voice and data simultaneously.

At a hefty cost, the Virgin Mobile iPhone 4 delivers an unlimited plan without a contract -- just don't expect blazing-fast data speeds.

Apple's iPhone 4 is still a good smartphone, but it costs too much compared with Virgin's Android-powered competitors.

The least expensive iPhone available (with service, over two years). Excellent high-res screen. Terrific apps.

Apple iPhone 4 Verizon Wireless

The Verizon iPhone 4 offers a hot-spot feature not available on AT&T's device. Performance was better in most regards.

The Verizon iPhone 4 lacks world roaming and the ability to access voice and data simultaneously. The hot-spot feature didn't work with all devices.

The Verizon iPhone 4 has much in common with its AT&T counterpart, but varying features and different performance give it enough room to stand apart. It won't vastly change your iPhone experience, but we welcome the consumer choice that it brings.
