BlackBerry Bold 9700 review: Dare you go

Some handsets will work their socks off to have their fifteen minutes of fame, others are simply born into stardom. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is certainly fortunate to carry a name that stands for popularity and excellence in the RIM family of phones....

2.44" 65K-color TFT landscape display with a resolution of 480 x 360 pixels ; Comfortable four-row full QWERTY keyboard ; Quad-band GSM support and tri-band 3G with HSDPA ; Wi-Fi and built-in GPS and BlackBerry maps preloaded ; 3.15 autofocus megapixel...

Many features are locked without a BlackBerry Internet Service account (plan) ; Mediocre camera performance and features ; No FM radio ; No video-call camera ; No TV-out functionality ; No built-in accelerometer ; No built-in compass

These high expectations have quite often turned otherwise decent handsets into a byword for failure. It's simply not enough to provide incremental improvements when upgrading an iconic handset. The iPhone somehow gets away with that, but Apple usually...

BlackBerry Bold 9700 review

RIM's successor to the original Bold -- the BlackBerry Bold 9700 -- has finally landed on our doorsteps. The 9000 is in many ways a hard act to follow. Hardware-wise, it lived up to its name, going where most phones never went with its retro, leathery,...

Great optical trackpad ; Improved camera performance ; Snappier operation

Outdated operating system ; Slightly cheaper build than its predecessor ; Keyboard is more cramped than the original

BlackBerry Bold 9700 (AT&T)

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 hits the ground running on AT&T, with excellent voice quality and numerous useful enhancements over the original design.

Near-perfect design. Beautiful display. Great voice quality. Robust media sync options. Excellent battery life.

Middling browser. Buggy video player. Lacks the T-Mobile version's unlimited Wi-Fi calling.

Camera and Conclusions The 3.2-megapixel camera—up from the Bold 9000's 2 megapixels—includes image stabilization, auto-focus, and an LED flash. Test results were more or less identical to the Storm2 's on Verizon. Photos were reasonably sharp and well...

BlackBerry Bold 9700 (AT&T) review

Editors' note: Portions of the Features section were taken from our review of the T-Mobile RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 since the two versions share a number of similarities.

The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 features a sleeker design than its predecessor and adds a 3.5mm headphone jack, a responsive optical trackpad, and an extra-sharp display. The smartphone is fast and offers the full range of wireless options and robust...

The BlackBerry browser lags behind the competition in terms of usability and features. You can only download apps to the phone's main memory.

Though Web browsing is not its forte, the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 is one of the most powerful and best messaging smartphones in AT&T's lineup.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 (T-Mobile)

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 improves on previous models, but it doesn't rock BlackBerry's very successful boat—or address its primary flaws.

Excellent form factor. Razor-sharp screen. Wi-Fi calling. Good keyboard. Solid call quality.

Browser still needs help. Not a big jump up from earlier models.

Conclusions The BlackBerry Bold 9700 isn't as radical or innovative as our Editors' Choice, the Motorola CLIQ . But if you're looking to make Wi-Fi calls for free from any hotspot you can find, the CLIQ is out of the picture. The BlackBerry Curve 8900...

Excellent, ergonomic keyboard ; Attractive, slimmed-down design

Camera is just average ; Browser can't compete with other top phones

The best BlackBerry available, the Bold 9700 packs a multitude of features into a sophisticated, slimmed-down design.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 (T-Mobile) review

It's been about a year since the original RIM BlackBerry Bold made its debut, and while it remains a very solid device, it's about time that a flashier, faster model took over the reigns. And that device would be the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700. Not only...

The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 boasts a sleeker design that includes an optical trackpad, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a brilliant display. The smartphone is 3G capable and offers Wi-Fi with UMA support, Bluetooth, and GPS. It also gets a faster processor...

The BlackBerry browser doesn't compare to the competition. The handset's compact size results in a smaller display and keyboard, but they aren't deal-breakers.

The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 brings T-Mobile its first 3G BlackBerry and improves on its predecessor with a sleeker design and more power. We only wish it had a better browser to complete the package.

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Curve 8530: side by side

RIM has two new devices on the market, both a refresh of popular originals. The Curve 8530 replaces the Curve 8330 on the nation's major CDMA carriers, and the Bold 9700 is an overhaul of the 9000. Given that both run on the same platform is there...
