CAT S60 hands-on: CAT at MWC 2016

CAT's latest S60 smartphone went official earlier this week, and it is beyond interesting. It is the first smartphone to offer unseen before water resistance - up to 5 meters deep, but it is also the first smartphone to pack a thermal camera.

Cat S60

The Cat S60 is a unique unlocked phone with an extra-rugged body and a built-in thermal imaging camera, but it's relatively costly for the specs.

Accurate thermal imaging camera. Rugged, waterproof build. Useful pre-installed apps. Latest Android software. Expandable storage.

Sluggish camera sensors. Mediocre specs for the price. Back flap can pop open upon impact. Lackluster call quality.

Conclusions If you need a super-rugged phone with a built-in thermal imaging camera, look no further than the Cat S60. But at $600, it's nearly as pricey as top-tier devices like the rugged Samsung Galaxy S7 Active and the shatterproof Moto Z Force...

Cat S60 review: a rugged phone that can see in the dark

Owning a smartphone means you're also privy to the very particular fear of dropping that smartphone. And many of us go different lengths to mitigate this problem. Some of us slap our phones in big,...

Very rugged ; Thermal camera is fun and useful ; Good standard camera

Mediocre screen ; Expensive ; Hefty design ; Thermal camera app is sluggish

If Superman was a phone, he'd be the Cat S60

You know you have a heavy-duty phone on your hands when it has a thermal imaging camera and tiny switches that prepare it for a 16-foot underwater dive.

The Cat S60 features a built-in thermal imaging camera. It can consistently survive 6 foot drops onto concrete and can take a 16 foot dunking into water. It has an expandable microSD card slot and loud front-facing speakers.

It's significantly thicker and heavier than other smartphones. The thermal imaging feature while cool and fun, is mostly useless aside from some specific cases.

The Cat S60's durable build is impressive, but its appeal is limited to those who can make good use of its built-in thermal imaging camera.

CAT S60 Review: Hardcore to a fault

The world's first thermal imaging smartphone is the CAT S60, a device first introduced back in February of 2016. This smartphone is part of a collection of Android-based devices made by the folks at CAT, aka Caterpillar. We've not traditionally...

Extreme ruggedness ; FLIR thermal camera ; Headphone jack ; SOS hardware button / Multi-function button ; Unique industrial design

Super thick, wide body ; Tiny display for size of phone ; Extreme lack of software updates ; Cameras are baseline ; GSM/HSPA only (AT&T, T-Mobile, no Verizon)

Cat S60 Review: Batman called and wants his phone back

A rugged phone designed for someone who puts durability ahead of performance.

It has a Flir camera. Need I say more? ; Waterproof up to an hour ; Battery life that keeps going, and going, and going

Big, heavy and cumbersome ; Not the fastest phone on the block ; Expensive

Cat’s S60 smartphone is designed to take a beating and keep working, with the added benefit of an infrared camera.

Cat S60 Review: This Rugged Phone Beats the S7 Active

The Cat S60 tops its next-closest competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active , in almost every way. It's more durable, has a brighter screen, lasts longer on a charge and looks better. At $599, the S60 is cheaper, too. And that's before you even talk...

Great battery life ; Unique built-in thermal imaging feature ; Attractive, durable design ; Superbright screen

Mediocre performance ; Lackluster low-light photos ; No 802.11 ac Wi-Fi

The Cat S60 takes rugged phones to a new level with the world's first built-in thermal camera, a surprisingly elegant design and fantastic battery life. The Cat S60 takes rugged phones to a new level with the world's first built-in thermal camera, a...

Cat S60 review: The only phone that gives you Predator vision

The Cat S60 is the very first Cat phone we've reviewed on Android Police, and it should be obvious why. These are niche devices that mainstream consumers

Should you buy the Cat S60? Almost certainly not. This is not a phone for the average consumer, but I could see businesses buying them for employees. Almost every contractor I've dealt with was carrying some sort of smartphone in a giant ruggedized...

CAT S60

The CAT S60 is one of the most interesting smartphones I've tested this year. Featuring a rugged, near-indestructible chassis, the S60 is the first phone I've seen with a built-in thermal imaging sensor.
