First review of the HTC Wizard/QTEK 9100/I-mate K-JAM crops up

Not to whet your appetite too much for a device that apparently won't be out here until early next year (sigh), but the peeps at geek.com got their hands on a pre-production QTEK 9100 and production I-mate K-JAM (aka, the HTC Wizard-not to be confused...

i-mate K-JAM HTC Wizard Pocket PC Phone

Combined Quad-band Phone/PDA, Good performance, 802.11g WiFi (54Mbps), Bluetooth 1.2 (or possibly 2.0 with upgrade), Excellent thumboard, Excellent screen, Decent ROM available to the user (47.5Mb), Small size, Windows Mobile 5, Combined Quad-band...

Telescopic Stylus (although its not too bad), miniSD slot instead of standard SD, A bit on the thick side, Case that makes the device VERY thick, No where near 128Mb ROM available (47.5Mb available to the user), Telescopic Stylus (although its not too...

HTC Wizard platform - the example of Qtek 9100 smartphone (Qtek 9100, I-mate K-Jam, T-mobile MDA Vario, Orange SPV M6000, O2 XDA Mini Pro, Dpod 838)

It took manufacturers little time to find the happy medium, a compromise between the size and comfortable QWERTY-keyboard. This is a so-called side slider form-factor.

T-Mobile MDA Vario (HTC Wizard)

The HTC phone with the sliding keyboard gets a guarded recommendation, but a successor model that fixed the keyboard flaw would be a winner.

Heckuva Great device.

Does anything a mini PC will do and then some.

I live in an area where the phone signal is low but works OK.

Excellent reception

Powerful device and the reception gives Nokia a run for their money.

Thick, bulky and slow internet

Cool- but with Issues

Good display, responsive, good connectivity options, cool keyboard, nifty design, good build quality construction

Can't use keyboard(s) when driving, annoying interface options, minimal manual

Cingular 8125 Pocket PC: Too Intense for Me, But Might Work Well for You...

Nice appearance, good functionality, lots of versatility

Complicated for a new user, sound quality so so on incoming calls, somewhat slow processor

Great hybrid device with minor quirks

Does almost everything a PC can!

No physical keypad for dialing. Smallish stylus. Some features of Windows Mobile 5 are irksome.
