Moto G Play (2023) review: no fun here

The Moto G Play (2023) is Motorola's first new phone of the year, costing just $170. Is it the new budget champ, or does it make too many sacrifices?

Good build quality Decent main camera Very long battery life

Uses a two-year-old processor Comes with Android 12, upgrades only to Android 13 No 5G, NFC, or wireless charging 10W fast charging speed Fingerprint sensor is awkwardly placed A lot of stuttering and frame rate drops

“The most impressive thing about the Moto G Play (2023) is its $170 price. But it becomes apparent very quickly how many corners Motorola cut to get there.”

Moto G Play (2024) Gets a High-Refresh Rate Display and a Better Camera for $150

Motorola's newest Moto G Play phone, which goes on sale Thursday in the US, is a $150 media-playing machine. It's got a 6.5-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate and dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support.

Despite the shortcomings regarding the operating system and onboard storage, $150 is a low price for an unlocked phone with a 90Hz display and Dolby Atmos audio support. The phone will be available first in Canada on Jan. 26 and then head to the US on...

Moto G Play (2023) Review: Low Price, Lots of Compromises

The essentials-only Motorola phone cuts to the bone in order to hit its $170 price.

Long battery life ; Clean version of Android 12 ; Three years of security updates

Frequent lag, issues loading software ; Questionable refresh rate ; No "twist to open camera" gesture

Motorola Moto G Play (2023) Review

Affordable ; Large 90Hz display ; Good call quality

No 5G ; Underwhelming performance ; Low-resolution screen ; Lackluster speaker

The Motorola Moto G Play is a decent phone for under $200, but there are better options if you're willing to spend just a bit more.

Motorola Moto G Play (2023) Review: you can probably do better

It is very hard make a good truly affordable phone, but there are some bare minimum requirements that should be met in this day and age. The Moto G Play fails to meet one such major requirement, but is otherwise an alright phone for its price.

Stellar battery life ; Good build for the price ; Big display ; Comes with a charger ; Stellar battery life ; Good build for the price ; Big display ; Comes with a charger

I switched to a $150 Motorola phone for two weeks, and it went better than expected

Motorola's Moto G Play 2024 looks and feels better than its price suggests, and the software provides an enjoyable experience for most people's needs.

One of my primary phones is the OnePlus Open, but I will never take the $1,699 foldable with me when I run, ride my bike, or head to the beach. In situations like those, a backup like the 2024 Moto G Play is perfect for maintaining communications while...

Moto G Play (2023) review: A budget phone bust

The Moto G Play (2023) suffers from poor performance, lackluster cameras, and an underwhelming display. Save up for something a bit better than this sub-$200 handset.

I cannot recommend the Moto G Play (2023) under any circumstances. You’re better off looking at an older higher-end phone for this price. You would be surprised at what you can find on eBay and Swappa.

Moto G Play (2023) review: Wasn't worth the wait

Motorola's first smartphone of 2023 is the new Moto G Play. After skipping a year, one expects considerable upgrades to this new model. However, the experience suggests quite the opposite. It's cheap, but that affordability comes at a considerable cost.
