Sony Xperia Z Ultra review

Sony's Xperia Z Ultra has a powerful processor and jaw-dropping 6.4-inch screen, but its camera, battery life, single speaker, camera, and sheer size make it just too big and boxy to use comfortably.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra leaves us with mixed feelings. Its components and performance are in line with the best phones we’ve tested so far; its screen is gorgeous and huge, making for great gaming and movie watching; it certainly looks and feels the...

Sony Xperia Z Ultra review: Thinking big

Unwieldy size for a phone, Non user-replaceable battery, No camera flash or camera shutter key, Below average loudspeaker performance (probably due to the increased water tightness), No proper video playback decoders (XviD, DivX) out of the box

Phone or tablet? One of the rivals was telling us to "feel free". If asked, Sony would probably go for a simple yes . As in, why not have both. As in we cannot quite make up our mind either. As in... hell yeah. The latter suits the Sony Xperia Z Ultra....

Sony Xperia Z Ultra review: the best phone you'll probably never buy

More InfoSony Xperia Z Ultra hands-onSony Xperia Z reviewSamsung Galaxy Mega reviewWhat we're about to describe is the same kind of

Beautiful display ; Sleek, gorgeous design ; Waterproof ; Powerful performance

Awkward to hold ; No camera flash ; Battery life is decent, but doesn't live up to expectations

The Z Ultra is a powerful phone with a great display, but your purchase decision will ultimately depend on the price and how well the phone fits in your hand.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra hands-on: First look

Sony just dropped a real bomb on the phablet market - a 6.4" monster that threatens to flatten the competition. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra the first officially announced device to be powered by Snapdragon 800 and it's also the thinnest device with a 1080p...

Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Z Ultra Google Play Edition review

If you're looking for the biggest smartphone you can get, without regard for portability and price, then you needn't look any further than the Sony Z Ultra. Available in two flavors, one with...

Great display ; Fast performance ; Water resistent design

Awkward handling ; Average battery life ; Software could make better use of screen size

Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition (Unlocked)

The Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition puts stock Android on one of the most absurdly big, but undeniably beautiful and powerful smartphones around.

Big, beautiful 1080p display. Slim, refined design. Runs stock Android 4.4. Fast Snapdragon 800 processor. Incredible battery life. Waterproof

Enormous. Average camera. Lacks software to take advantage of screen real estate

Stock Android fans rejoice—Google is quietly expanding its Google Play Edition lineup. The Sony Z Ultra ($649 direct) drops the Xperia branding and joins the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, adding another option for vanilla Android outside of the Nexus family....

Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition review

Sony smartphone lovers have long waited for a Google Play Edition (GPE) device they can crow about, but unfortunately the $649 Sony Z Ultra GPE isn't it. Ridiculously large and awkward to use, at least as a traditional mobile handset, the Ultra is far...

The Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition squeezes a stunningly bright, and colorful display, stock Android 4.4 KitKat, and a muscular processor into an extremely thin package. With sealed ports, the water-resistant Z Ultra needn't fear liquid or exposure...

Even considering the Sony Z Ultra GPE’s carrier-unsubsidized status, $649 is an exorbitant amount to pay. The Z Ultra’s overblown size makes it unwieldy to operate and its camera is disappointing.

The Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition's insanely large size and stratospheric price make the Nexus 5 and Note 3 better options for pure Android power.

Size Matters

Positioned somewhere between the Z and the Z Tab, the new Xperia Z Ultra is Sony's latest flagship phone. Actually, calling this thing a phone (or even a phablet) is a bit of a stretch, given its whopping 6.44-inch display. It is, after all, only...

Water and dust resistant. Spectacularly bright display with great contrast and wide viewing angles. 3050 mAh battery easily lasts all day

It’s crazy big. Odd dock connector location on the left-hand side. Like on the Xperia Z, the tempered-glass front and rear panels are still huge fingerprint magnets. Grainy low-light photos

Sony Xperia Z Ultra (Unlocked)

The well-built, beautiful Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the biggest, baddest Android smartphone you'll find, but at 6.4 inches, it takes things to such a ridiculous extreme that we're not even sure it actually qualifies as a phone.

Big, beautiful 1080p display. Slim, refined design. Fast Snapdragon 800 processor. Incredible battery life. Waterproof.

Enormous. Really, it's too big. Average camera. No multitasking.

Conclusions The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is an absolute monster of a phone, but it's also an elegantly designed, blazing fast monster of a phone. I'm torn here because I'm convinced that no one in their right mind would want to use this as their everyday...

Sony Xperia Z Ultra: One phablet to rule them all (hands-on)

This phablet packs the Xperia Z's beautiful design in a supersized 6.44-inch frame and looks set to give the Samsung Galaxy Note range a run for its money.
