Review: Delonghi Magnifica

You're really, really hungover and in need of a powerful triple espresso shot just to get through the day. But that journey out to the...

Superb cup warmer. Milk container cleans up nicely and has a large capacity Single push button easily cleans milk container. Good value. Front loading trays are convenient with limited counter space

Milk canister must be removed to gain access to water tank. Grinder loud enough to wake the dead. Very few preset drink buttons. Bean hopper is challenging and awkward to refill

A deal at 3x the price I paid. You can't ask for much more from a home-model super-auto.

Long had I gazed over the counter at the beauty and majesty of the Magnifica only to fully realize that my mere barista's salary could ne'er afford such a luxury. Even by saving my tips I was only just reaching the point where I could pick out a less...

Price - if you can find it ; Ease of use ; Large water tank ; Large hopper ; Nice steaming wand ; Easy to refill and clean everything ; Large puck ; Consistent grind and adjustable

Mostly plastic casing ; Coffee hopper guard - explained below ; Small-ish puck capacity ; No stay on option ; Noise

tips & tricks

These are great machines and others have already provided great overviews. I wanted to add some tips I have found working with the machine. I have the esam4400 without the milk frothing pitcher, but all of them are the same internally.

Great machine overall. Espresso is better than many coffee houses. Steam quantity is good once it gets going. Fast warmup overall. Saves so much time in the morning. 2 year warranty on new models from delonghi

If you forget to press the bypass doser button before adding pre-ground coffee, it makes a mess inside the machine. Steamer squirts out fair amount of water before steam starts, so don't start into your pitcher until you see steam. Steam knob feels...

Extremely wife-friendly in terms of aesthetics, usability and cleanup. Above average espresso quality from a super-automatic (after dialing it in), wh

I've had the gamut of semi-auto machines in the past, from a Gaggia Coffee, to an Evolution, a Sylvia and a Francis X3, and I've also been the guy who gets to dial in the super-autos I've used in office environments, so I've got a fair amount of...

(This is for the Magnifica 3400, which doesn't have the auto-milk-frothing reservoir like some of the newer models) ; This is the first consumer super-automatic I've used that could be dialed to ~24 second doubles and produce something that tastes like...

Too much plastic, although it matches very well in a stainless kitchen ; Rather flimsy steam knob. I'm terrified that I'll break this quickly ; So far I've noticed one error message that's not detailed in the manual: "Less Coffee" and I went through an...

Frugal automatic that is great for the kitchen or as a gift for a parent or 20+ kid. Nice pours and not tempermental.

This is a great, inexpensive machine. Look around for discounts, use your angles, and you can easily find it under $600. With work, or if you were willing to buy a used machine (eww?), you could probably find it for a little more than half that.

Excellent price point, easily available at a steep discount for the non-digital version ; Extremely quick setup, can easily have your first decent cup of coffee from it within half an hour after signing for it from the UPS guy ; Nice pour

Can't produce significant volume ; Single boiler ; Inflexible steam wand ; Plastic housing

Very satisfied

Bought the reconditioned model from ebay. Fast delivery. After about 6-8 shots I had it dialed in with what I believe to be lower quality beans purchased from a local coffee shop. At first attempt at frothing milk the machine would not produce steam...

Ease of use and learning curve ; Quality of espresso and froth ; Simple clean up

Great machine if you don't pay full retail price. Search on eBay there are plenty of them available refurbished.

I am a coffee geek freak and always convinced my Rancilio Silivia was the best home machine. Going super auto?! I am so glad I did :) I took my Silvia to work to avoid paying for Starbucks but I am seriously thinking buying another Magnifica instead....

Best bang for your buck ; I got this baby refurbished on eBay for $380.00 free shipping ; Machine looks brand new comes with great instructional DVD ; Great espresso shots

Simple to operate, Great tasting coffee. Remove the auto frother and easily learn your own techninque for making the right type of froth for Caps, Lat

This is a very simple to operate unit that makes a very professional tasting coffee. It's easy to use and simple to clean out. The unit tells you when to clean, when to fill the tank and when the hopper needs more beans. Bean grind can be adjusted.

Simple to operate ; Great double shot system ; Easy to clean ; Variable strength ; No more mess makes it a favourite with my wife

Milk frothing technique needs to be learned ; Works better with milk frother removed ; Maybe the water tank could hold a bit more

Great machine with quick cleanup!!

After spending $20 a week or more on cappuccinos, I decided to invest in a machine.

Automatic all in one grinder/espresso maker

If you love micro-foam-there is a technique not found in the directions

Highly recommended, look for a bargain.

For those who like espresso regularly and don't have time to always tamp and fuss this is a great machine. Look for a bargain on e-bay. Got mine as a floor model for just over 400. It had only been used for several days. The directions are very...

Extremely user friendly. Great results

Not for those who like the process of making their own. Also a little large on the counter compared to others
