Asus Xonar Essence STX

There are a few dirty secrets in the tech industry, and one of the best-guarded among them regards multichannel audio—everybody wants multichannel audio but almost no one actually runs the speakers to use it.

Pricey and lacks full EAX support

Asus Xonar D1 - Bjorn3D.com

The average person doesn't spend three to four hundred of dollars on a graphics card. This is evident by the large percentage of cards sold that are in the $100 price range. Unlike us hardcore geeks, some people have better things to do with their...

The Asus Xonar D1 had its moments, but overall the card did not offer much at all over the onboard sound which comes at a cost of nothing. The D1 on the other hand has a price of ~$90 USD. If you absolutely demand to have a sound card, this at least...

Asus Xonar D1 Review

Asus is pronounced "A-soose" (like saying "A juice", but with an "s"). Little factoid for you there. I'm not the only one who started off calling them "Ay-suss" (and still do, bad habits die hard). I guess it's just something most people don't know to...

Distinctly superior sound quality compared to modern onboard audio (Realtek ALC889) ; The best implementation of speaker virtualisation I have heard ; Excellent bass redirection controls ; Optical digital output ; Low profile compatible

Not quite able to match up to an audiophile-modded soundcard for music playback

To be quite honest, when I received this low-profile soundcard, I wasn't expecting much from it, but the claims of being so much better than onboard audio made me curious.

Great mainstream soundcard!

Make sure to pick up the drivers off the ASUS website. Nothing else works. Take the time to do it right and you'll have great sound, hassle free.

Excellent sound reproduction. Also boosts the sound, a feature which many people who say you don't need a soundcard are missing. I love that you can still get a PCI card that has updated drivers that work in W8.1

ASUS Xonar D1

Sounds great that makes my onboard (Realtek ALC 892) sound card looks like if it was 15 years old, I hate myself for not buying this sound card long time ago, you have to hear it to believe... I use creative gigaworks T40 Series II. pair of speakers...

amazing sound, clean, clear, powerful sound card ; compact (easy to install)

no auto-detect front panel aux (have to do it manually)

good sound

bought this to replace a xonar d2x that died after a year. the d2x seemed to run hot. don't know if it was defective or what. the d1 audio is quite good and doesn't get too hot.

had this card for almost 2 years now. still working great. the sound is noticeably better than integrated mobo audio. works fine with linux -- at least the versions i've used

Ecellentc all around card

overall a great card got it to replace a Creative X-Fi that stopped working. ASUS drivers take less resources than creative. the optical out is amazing when hooked up to a receive. For a sub $100 card its well worth it. small, reliable both physically...

Great sound ; optical out ; small size ; good price for quality ; good drivers ; easy to install and use

the outputs could be better labeled ; it could be cheaper

great sound card

awesome sound card, no driver issues, amazing sound quality

The front panel detection is kind of goofy. I have to open the ASUS control panel to switch between front panel headset or rear speakers for my 2.1 Klipsch set. kinda annoying but better than the BSODs I got from my old Creative X-Fi Titanium which had...

Great Value

the software isn't exactly intuitive or straightforward

Consumer review (newegg.com)

Does the job

Works as it should. The software is user-friendly and not buggy

There is no color-coding on the output ports. Only tiny, barely legible etched descriptions (ie. front, side, sub, etc.) My surround speakers don't have descriptions on their inputs...only color coded. So I had to do some minor digging to determine...
