Shuttle KPC K-4500 review: Shuttle KPC K-4500

Shuttle KPC K-4500

Almost as small as a Mac Mini; only costs $230; Foresight Linux operating system relatively easy to use; has potential as a home media server or general hack-around box.

No internal DVD drive bay; adding software to Foresight can be a challenge; no digital audio or video outputs.

Shuttle's KPC K-4500 has appeal as a prebuilt Linux PC for a tech-savvy owner to play around with or as a more or less accessible, basic computer to bestow upon a loved one (for whom you're willing to provide tech support). If you're aware of the...

nice and small

With all the cons I do I like it.

nice and small, great price, shiney, connects nicely to my 40' Samsung TV

For those that dump the O/S that it came with and install Windows XP, beware I was not able to do it with trying 3 different external USB optical drives and several XP CD's. It would just go black after the first Windows install screen when it detects...

slimmer version may be better for you

Go with the cheaper version if you don't mind building yourself.

Nice version to those who don't want to build

You are basically paying too much for the extra parts. I would build this with a celeron processor but I would not be using the anemic 512mb of ram or the 80gb hard drive

IT Guru

Note This has nothing to do with NEWEGG they only sell it, it is totally a manufacturer issue and compliance between the US federal Gov, Shuttle and you as purhcaser and enduser NewEgg rocks brings us variety and new toys rock on ! ... just wish the...

I was thinking about getting this one as it seems compact and equipped, but now I have issues with it ( see below)

Beware: Note the waranty sticker on back of comptuer ; After seeing the waranty sticker I am steering clear of this shuttle computer just for what the company is trying to do to their customers. Over priced for what they imply and limit you to on their...

Great Windows Home Server Box!

Love these SFF Shuttles

This is the perfect box for Windows Home server. Small, quiet, pleanty of power for WHS. If I had known about this when building mine, I'd have gotten it.

Will need more Harddrive space. Maybe 2x500GB. Will also need an external DVD drive for WHS installation.

Best Bang for the Buck.

Immediately open this puppy up and take the header off the hard drive, it will let it operate at sata II instead of I. I put two Crucial Ballistix 1gb sticks in and it flies even with the Celeron.

The build quality is amazing, you're getting a whole system for less than most Shuttle barebones. Case is solid, small, relatively light. Seagate 7200.10 3.0gb not sata 150 as listed. The ram is Crucial. Booted into Foresight which isn't a half bad...

945GC Chipset supports pci-e, a pci-e x1 slot would have been more forward thinking instead of a pci. GMA950 isn't the most capable onboard graphics solution, but it seems to be towing the line. Warranty void if removed sticker? Sorry but you know...
