Canon EOS-1D X field review

Just before Halloween in 2009, Canon announced its most powerful DSLR to date. The $5,000 professional-grade EOS-1D Mark IV was the company's answer to Nikon'...

What's a field review, you ask? Essentially, the term serves to clarify that our analysis is based on real-world usage, which regrettably doesn't include the thorough benchmarking a camera of this caliber ordinarily requires. It's a perfectly suitable...

Canon EOS-1D X

The Canon EOS-1D X is a great choice for sports shooters and photojournalists, but is likely an overkill for most shooters.

Full-frame image sensor. 14fps burst capability. 61-point autofocus system. Excellent images at very high ISO settings. Built like a tank. Loads of controls. Dual CF card slots. 1080p video capture.

Very expensive. Heavy. No built-in flash. No headphone jack. Uncompressed HDMI video output not possible. Switching between still and video live view mode is cumbersome.

The rear LCD is big at 3.2 inches, but it looks small when framed by the 1D X's body. Its resolution is an impressive 1,040k-dots. It's a bit sharper than the 920k-dot display found on the Nikon D800, but even looking at them side-by-side it's hard to...

Canon EOS-1D X

And then there was one - one Canon EOS 1-Series DSLR body. The Canon EOS-1D X.

A phenomenon has been fixed in which the white balance may be disturbed by the timing of the shutter release when the drive mode is single shooting and a flash (E-TTL)is used.

Canon 1DX Review

This is without a doubt the most impressive camera I've seen since I went digital. There: You have the executive summary. The Canon 1D X is a certified monster of a camera. It's the biggest, the fastest, and if you'll permit me to create a word that is...

The reason to buy the Canon 1D X is simple: If you want speed and plenty of it, and the best autofocus on any full-frame DSLR, the 1DX is your camera. It's too big, too expensive, and it's missing just a few video features such as audio monitoring in...

Canon EOS-1D X - Almost at the Apex

The 1D X represents the pinnacle of Canon's DSLR camera technology, and it mostly doesn't disappoint. It succeeds not just one, but two previous high-end cameras, and ups the game with faster frame-rates, higher ISO settings and improved handling. But...

Fastest full-frame camera at 12 fps ; Vertical handling as good as horizontal ; Dual CF memory card slots ; Auto-focus fast and accurate in good light ; Excellent image quality with little noise

Auto-focus inconsistent in low-light

The 1D X represents the pinnacle of Canon's DSLR camera technology, and it mostly doesn't disappoint. The body is rock-solid and the controls have been further expanded to work better in both the vertical and horizontal grips. It's also great that the...

Camera Review: Canon EOS-1D X

Canon unleashes a digital beast with this fast-shooting, full-frame, flagship DSLR.

Incredibly fast frame rate and performance speed; beautiful image quality even in extremely low light at extremely high ISOs; tough, sturdy build with an elegant overall design despite its beefy size; a boatload of features, most of which are extremely...

Expensive; no built-in Wi-Fi; no headphone jack; studio photographers might find the resolution wanting

The Canon 1D X may be expensive but make no mistake, you get a whole lotta camera for $6,800. If there’s anything I can say that’s critical of this superstar DSLR from Canon—aside from a few minor things like a missing headphone jack, etc.—it’s that...
