Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is one of the better starter lenses out there, but it has the same flaws that are common in similar lenses.

Sharp. STM focus motor. Optical stabilization.

Plastic lens mount. Noticeable distortion. Some color fringing and fall-off. Narrow aperture. Hood not included.

Despite its flaws, which are pretty common in 18-55mm designs, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is a pretty decent performer. It's sharp throughout, and you can always make some quick edits in software if you are serious enough about your shots...

Canon EF-M 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM

The Canon EF-M 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM is sharper and better made than many 18-55mm lenses, but shows noticeable distortion at wider angles.

Sharp. Optically stabilized. 3x zoom range. Well built.

Small aperture. Noticeable distortion. Electronic manual focus. Hood not included.

If you bought the EOS M with the 22mm f/2 STM lens and feel limited by a single focal length, the EF-M 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM is your only current option with which to supplement it. The zoom is impressively sharp, but has a small aperture. This...

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

If you're looking to upgrade your 18-55mm kit lens, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is a good, but expensive, way to go.

Very sharp at wider angles. Fast aperture. Minimal distortion.

Big. Expensive. Soft at 55mm.
