Canon PowerShot G6 Review

Successor to the popular PowerShot G5 the new PowerShot G6 was announced on 19th August 2004. At the beginning of the year it became clear that Canon wouldn't be jumping on the six megapixel 1/1.8" CCD bandwagon, instead they were holding off for the...

Good resolution (better in real life than res chart), Punchy color, balanced tone (good shadow detail), Low noise, very low noise reduction / none, About a stop more sensitive than indicated, Good macro performance, Improved lens, much lower fringing...

Shallow angle jaggies affected resolution chart, Low continuous shooting speed with LCD on, USB 1.1 transfer (slow), Heaviest seven megapixel tested, No live view histogram, Limited image parameter adjustment

As the successor to the popular G5 the G6 has a lot to live up to.

Canon PowerShot A85

In Canon's ever-growing arsenal of consumer-level compact digital cameras, the 4-megapixel Canon PowerShot A85 replaces the popular PowerShot A70.

Good exposure and colors. Strong flash illumination. Offers manual controls. Good battery life with included alkalines.

Images are a bit soft. Daylight shots are grainy in the shadows. Disappointing movie capabilities. You can't save custom settings.

The PowerShot A85 offers plenty of manual control, and battery life from the included four double-A alkaline batteries is good. Serious photographers may not be satisfied with the image quality, which was acceptable but not outstanding for a 4MP model....

Canon PowerShot A85

The PowerShot A85 is the 4-megapixel "big brother" of the PowerShot A75 and replaces the Powershot A70, one of the most successful cameras in Canon's seventy year history. The A85 builds on this success by adding new features that make it even easier to u

Canon PowerShot A85

Like the A70 and A75, the PowerShot A85 is has a 3X optical zoom, full manual controls, support for conversion lenses, and more

Excellent value ; Very good photo quality ; Full manual controls ; AF-assist lamp ; Lots of manual controls for a cheap camera ; Support for conversion lenses, underwater case ; Lots of scene modes ; Impressive software package

Cheesy plastic door over CF slot ; LCD doesn't "gain up" in low light ; No rechargeable batteries included ; Movie mode has low frame rate, short recording times

Overall, though, this camera comes just as highly recommended as the other A-series cameras that I've tested. Which one should you buy? The A75 is fine for most people. If you plan on making prints larger than 8 x 10 inches (or like to crop your...
