2013 Waterproof Camera Roundup

One of the fastest growing segments in the digital camera market is compact, rugged cameras. Five years ago you had just two manufacturers selling waterproof cameras (Olympus and Pentax). In 2013, every major manufacturer is now producing at least one...

While the compact camera market has been fairly stagnant over the last few years, one area in which there's been growth has been rugged/waterproof cameras. At one time there weren't a lot of choices in this segment, and now all the major camera...

Canon PowerShot D20

The GPS-equipped Canon PowerShot D20 is a well-built but large rugged camera with a sharp lens. It produces good-looking images at every supported ISO, but isn't the fastest tough camera that we've tested.

Sharp lens. Good high ISO performance. Integrated GPS.

Large, even for a rugged camera. So-so speeds. 1080p video limited to 24fps.

Performance and Conclusions The D20 is no slouch when it comes to performance, but it isn't the fastest tough camera we've tested. It starts and shoots in 1.4 seconds, can fire off a photo every half second, and records a 0.2-second shutter lag. The...

Canon PowerShot D20 Review

The Canon PowerShot D20 is a great new lifeproof addition to a line that Canon has not updated for several years. The body has been made more manageable and the electronics include the great components of their proven HS system for outstanding quality....

Smart Auto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations, detects up to 58 scenes ; Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record ; Tough" features: Waterproof, Dustproof, Shockproof and Freezeproof protect the camera ; Solid built...

Using the GPS shortens the battery life considerably ; Battery Life is less than 300 images, not very much for an adventurous trip ; Screen can be hard to see underwater at certain angles ; Placement of the Playback button is odd, and caused confusion...

Canon PowerShot D20 Review

After 3 years, Canon have updated their waterproof camera, the D10. Now, the PowerShot D20 comes with a larger 5x optical zoom, the same 12 megapixel resolution and a slimmer, squarer body. The sensor has new HS technology for good low light...

Our initial thoughts about the Canon Powershot D20 weren't good. It has a rather poor dynamic range which really shone through on the first set of pictures we took with it. The camera's metering prefers the darker areas over the light and will happily...

Big and bold, Canon's first foray into folded optical design was certainly a success, even if wide-angle optical quality suffered a bit. The Canon D20's overall performance put it at the top of both our Waterproof Camera Shootout 2012 and 2013 Best...

Canon PowerShot D20

The D20 is Canon's second waterproof model coming a not inconsiderable three years after the original D10 which coincidentally remains in the PowerShot Line-up. A wait of three years is a lifetime in the digital camera world, so you'd be forgiven for...

5x stabilised optical zoom ; Designed for purpose ; 1080p24 video recording ; built-in GPS receiver with track log

Very poor continuous shooting ; Poor noise handling ; No 'door open' warning ; Relatively expensive

The Canon PowerShot D20 is a point-and-shoot compact designed for use outdoors and in the water. The difference between the D20 and many other waterproof compacts, like the Panasonic Lumix TS20 / FT20 is that it's been designed from the ground up for...

Canon PowerShot D20

A solid outdoor shooter, but doesn't stand out from the pack.

Nice outdoor photos; Waterproof and drop-proof design

Mediocre lens hurts image quality; Feature set is relatively sparse

By our count, there are no less than 15 new waterproof cameras in the 2012 model year. We’ve never seen the pool so crowded before. The industry is counting on these adventure-ready cameras to close the sales gap left where cheap point-and-shoots used...

Canon Powershot D20

Canon's second rugged digital camera is encased in a more conventionally-designed body while providing a hefty amout of protection. The Powershot D20 can be taken underwater to a depth of 10m while being shockproof to falls from 1.5m and freezeproof...

Low image-noise until ISO 400, Nicely saturated colors, Generally responsive, Good stabilization, Quick optical zoom, Sharp MF-Assist view, Excellent LCD visibility, Excellent rugged construction, Quick shutter-lag, Good battery-life for GPS-enabled...

Softness at all ISO, strong past ISO 400, Unusable ISO 1600+, Narrow dynamic-range, Some over-exposure, Poor AWB in low-light, Very slow autofocus, Shutter-release too soft, Impossible to setup video framing, Lens too easy to block, Wrist-strap...

The Canon Powershot D20 is a rugged camera designed for use in extreme environments. Its waterproof build can be submerged to depth of 10m, withstand drops of 1.5m and be taken outside down to -10C. Needless to say, this camera can handle any type of...

Canon PowerShot D20

Hands-on with Canon's latest tough, waterproof compact.

Water, dust, shock and freeze proof ; Big buttons make it easy to operate ; Good range of shooting modes and digital filters ; Super Slow Motion movie recording

No manual control ; Top buttons a little close together

On the back of the D20 you’ll find a 3in, 460k-dot PureColour II LCD monitor, which represents a fairly substantial upgrade over the 2.5in, 230k-dot screen found on the D10. Indeed, the screen on the Canon PowerShot D10 was always one of its weaker...
