Canon PowerShot N100 review

While Canon should be commended for again thinking outside the box, the PowerShot N100 is packed with more tricks than actual must-have features.

Canon PowerShot N100 review

The Canon PowerShot N100 is an odd camera, but in completely different ways than the first N series model .

The Canon PowerShot N100 packs a larger-than-usual sensor and a lens that starts at a bright f1.8 aperture, a combination that gets you better photo quality in low-light conditions than you'd get from a typical point-and-shoot. Shooting performance is...

It's heavier and bigger than the similarly spec'ed PowerShot S120; the design overall isn't great; the rear-facing camera is sort of a waste; NFC is underutilized.

The Canon PowerShot N100's photos and performance are a step in the right direction for point-and-shoots, but the N100 design needs a bit more work and perhaps fewer novelties.

Canon PowerShot N100

The Canon PowerShot N100 expands on the original N's Creative Shot mode, and thankfully drops its predecessor's quirky design.

Sharp f/1.8 lens. Larger than average image sensor. 3.6fps image capture. Solid image quality through ISO 1600. Tilting touch-screen display. Creative Shot mode. Rear camera Dual Capture mode. Wi-Fi.

Pricey. No Raw shooting support. Lacks manual control modes. Controls limited in Creative Shot mode. Some barrel distortion. Limited zoom range.

It's also possible to use your phone or tablet as a remote control. A Live View feed streams from the N100 to the display of your handheld device, but control is limited. You can adjust the zoom, control the flash, set the self-timer, and fire the...

High image quality thanks to its large 1/1.7" image sensor ; Burst mode does not slow or have shot limit ; Selfie fans will like dual-lens capture modes ; Auto focus is fast and accurate ; Very good battery life ; High-resolution LCD ; Touch screen...

5x zoom power is modest ; 3.2fps burst mode is not lightning quick ; No high-speed burst modes ; In-camera editing is limited ; Smart shutter features can be unresponsive ; No burst shooting with flash ; USB cable not included ; Body is a little bulky
