Excellent quality. Very good performance. Wide-angle is 28mm.

No RAW files. Recycle time could be quicker. A little pricey.

The Canon PowerShot S80 is a little expensive, but it's a solid, compact camera that takes excellent photos.

Canon PowerShot S80 Review

Just over a year after the launch of the 7 megapixel PowerShot S70 Canon revealed its replacement, the new S80, which boasts a slight redesign, an extra million pixels and a few new features - including the latest DIGIC II processor. The S80 is smaller...

Excellent resolution, good per-pixel sharpness for this class of camera Low noise at ISO 50 and 100, not bad at 200 and 400 Fast, responsive operation Excellent metering and color Very clean, artefact-free images High quality wide-angle zoom (28 - 100...

Mild corner softness at wide-angle and maximum aperture Occasional lens flare and some highlight clipping New multi-control dial useful, but can be fiddly Lens slow at telephoto (F5.3) Would prefer a higher resolution LCD screen Mediocre macro mode...

After the rather uninspiring noise performance of the Panasonic LX1 and overblown image processing of the Olympus Stylus 800 I approached the update to the excellent PowerShot S70 with some trepidation. So it was a great relief to discover that the S80...

Canon PowerShot S80

Great image quality; snappy performance; sturdy and attractive.

Vignetting at widest angle; slowish lens; no uncompressed or raw-file support; jaggies and audio noise in movie mode.

Aside from one or two very minor lens shortcomings, Canon's new flagship S-series model stands out in its class.

Canon PowerShot S review

Intro Though it fails to garner the same across-the-board high marks as its predecessors, the Canon PowerShot S70 nevertheless acquits itself very well as an enthusiast's compact. A 7-megapixel camera with a 3.6X zoom lens, the S70's first-rate photos...

Relatively wide-angle lens; strong raw-shooting speed for a non-dSLR; above-average image quality.

Poor battery life; noisy lens.

Though it's still an excellent camera, some aspects of the S70 now lag behind its competitors'.

The PowerShot S80 packs a lot of features into its compact black body. How does it perform? Find out in our review

Very good photo quality ; Wide-angle lens ; Full manual controls and plenty of scene modes ; Large 2.5" LCD display (but see issues below) ; Impressive performance (save for focus speeds) ; Live histogram in record mode (and it's about time) ; Custom...

On the expensive side ; Some vignetting at wide-angle, especially with the flash; corners can be blurry as well ; Redeye ; No more RAW support ; Noisy at high ISO sensitivities ; Movie file size limit approaches quickly at higher resolution settings ;...

Even with its flaws, the S80 still offers a compelling package with its wide-angle lens, manual controls, and sleek design. It gets my recommendation, but it's worth checking out the competition as well, as they're also very good cameras.

Canon PowerShot S80

As the former flagship of Canon's hybrid digital cameras, the Canon PowerShot S80 houses 8 megapixels and an interesting XGA Movie mode. With its 1024 x 768-pixel resolution, this Movie mode captures 2.5 times more data than most digital cameras. The...

The Canon PowerShot S80 has a shiny black body that resembles the look of a kitchen appliance; it even has a sliding door that covers the front. The built-in flash is decent for a compact digital camera, reaching subjects up to 13.8 feet away. The S80...
