Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS

The 10X-optical-zoom Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS ($350 as of November 15, 2010) is one of five high-zoom compact cameras in Canon's point-and-shoot lineup, and its pocketable size, ease of use, and fun creative effects give it a lot of mainstream appeal....

Compact for a high-zoom camera ; Great modes for high-speed shooting ; Extremely easy to use ; Creative modes that mimic tilt-shift, isolate colors ; Good macro performance

Disappointing image quality ; Maximum aperture is f/3.4 ; No manual controls for shutter and aperture ; Lens skimps on the wide-angle end (36mm) ; Overpowering built-in flash ; Poor battery life ; Slow start-up-to-first-shot time

Despite some fun and useful features, the high-zoom PowerShot SD4500 IS has disappointing image quality, poor battery life, and a lack of manual controls.

Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS review: Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS

Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS

Lots of automatic shooting options; very good burst shooting; nicely designed.

Short battery life; average shooting performance; narrow lens.

The Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS delivers a long lens in an ultracompact body, as well as nice low-light photos and full HD movies--it just doesn't do it for very long without a recharge.

Canon PowerShot Digital Elph review

Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital Elph Generally stellar performance figures, great battery life, and an ultracompact design will score points for the Canon PowerShot SD300 with the point-and-shoot crowd, but its lack of manual controls, limited selection...

Ultracompact; solid battery life; excellent burst capabilities; low shutter lag; versatile movie mode.

Few manual controls or scene modes; inaccurate viewfinder with no diopter adjustment.

Putting excellent performance in an ultracompact package, the SD300 should please photographers who don't want manual controls or plentiful scene modes.

Canon IXUS 1000 HS Review

The Canon IXUS 1000 HS (also known as the SD4500 IS) is the first superzoom camera in the IXUS range, featuring a 10x optical zoom lens with a focal range of 36-360mm. The 10 megapixel Canon 1000 HS offers a high-sensitivity back-illuminated CMOS...

The Canon IXUS 1000 HS is a largely successful attempt to marry the style of the IXUS range with a big zoom lens, but the 36mm not-so-wide-angle setting, poor battery life, a lack of refinement in the handling department and the high price tag detract...

Canon SD4500 IS

The Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS design features a 10-megapixel CMOS image sensor at its core. The Canon SD4500IS follows in the footsteps of the PowerShot S90, by decreasing effective resolution to ten megapixels, with the goal of increasing low-light...

10x optical zoom in compact, easily pocketable camera ; Large 3-inch LCD display ; Good viewing angle on display ; Display is good in sunlight ; Dedicated movie shutter button ; 1920 x 1080/24fps HD video recording ; Optical zoom works while recording...

No wide-angle lens ; Bright chromatic aberration at both ends of the zoom ; HD video can be noisy ; Smart Auto not as good in low light ; Smart Auto avoids flash at times when it's necessary ; Not enough external controls ; Poor battery life ; Somewhat...

Flash: Our manufacturer-specified testing (shown at right) shows fairly bright results at the Canon rated distance of 12 feet, though the camera increased ISO to 800 to achieve this. The telephoto test was also fairly bright at 6.6 feet; though again,...

Canon IXUS 1000 HS / PowerShot SD4500 IS

Starting with the lens, the IXUS 1000 HS / SD4500 IS offers a 36-360mm equivalent range. Annoyingly this lacks the 28mm or even wider coverage of rival super-zooms, not to mention their often longer total reach, but that's part of the compromise of...

Slimmer and a little lighter than most compact super-zooms., Sensible resolution means better than average low-light quality., 1080p video, slow motion at QVGA and miniature effect at 720p., Handheld Night Scene mode greatly reduces noise at high ISOs

10x range falls short of some rivals and lacks true wide angle., Relatively poor battery life has you recharging frequently., Best quality 4:3 mode looks small on wide display., Highly compelling rivals from the likes of Panasonic and Sony

Canon IXUS 1000 HS Review

Is the slimmest 10x Optical zoom camera worth its salt?

Solid build quality, Great HD videos, Impressive low light performance

Low resolution LCD, Slow auto-focus

A 16:9 ratio 3.0 inch TFT screen with 230,000pixels and 100% coverage works flawlessly for HD videos; meanwhile black bands crop on either side of the screen while shooting in normal 4:3 ratio. The low resolution screen falls behind by a long shot...

Review: Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS camera

Despite some fun and useful features, the high-zoom PowerShot SD4500 IS camera has disappointing image quality, poor battery life, and a lack of manual controls.

However, this 10-megapixel camera's appeal comes at the expense of trade-offs, and more-demanding users will find that the compromises go beyond the camera's lack of manual controls. The SD4500 IS turned in disappointing scores for image quality in our...
