Canon PowerShot SD550 Digital Elph reviewed

PC Mag has bestowed its prestigious Editor's Choice award on Canon's ultracompact, and it seems ultraawesome, 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD550 Digital Elph. As we've reported before and its name kinda indicates, the $409-at-Amazon SD550 is an update of...

Quick performer. Excellent image quality. Unique "My Color" feature. Good ergonomics. Sleek and attractive.

Menus could be improved. No manual settings.

Just like the SD500, the Canon PowerShot SD550 Digital Elph is a versatile, accurate, fun 7MP compact camera that performed very well on our tests and will appeal to a broad section of shooterswhich is why, once again, it wins our Editor's Choice aw

Canon PowerShot Digital Elph review

Canon PowerShot Digital Elph

Ultracompact design; long battery life; excellent burst capabilities; low shutter lag; versatile movie mode.

Few manual controls or scene modes; image quality is far from stellar.

Decent image quality and a well-rounded snapshot feature set make the high-performance ultracompact Canon PowerShot SD450 one of the better choices in the current Digital Elph lineup.

Canon Powershot SD550

Announced August 2005 (only 6 months after its predecessor), the SD550 (which goes by the names of Digital Ixus 750 in Europe and IXY DIGITAL 700 in Japan) is the latest in a long line of ultra-compact 'ELPH' or 'IXUS' cameras stretching back to early...

Excellent resolution, Very compact and pocketable, Beautifully built and all-metal construction, Excellent color and exposure, Manual (custom) white balance, Fast focus and very responsive performance overall, Good flash performance, High performance...

Low contrast fine detail (such as foliage or hair) can look a little soft, AiAF focus unreliable - turn it off, Screen resolution not high enough for a 2.5-inch LCD, Some purple fringing, Slight corner softness at wide angle, Battery life when using...

Okay, so the SD550 hardly breaks new ground, and - coming only six or seven months after the SD500 it replaces - I'd have been surprised if it was.

Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph

The SD500 is a versatile, accurate, fun 7MP compact camera that performed very well on our tests and will appeal to a broad section of shooters.

Quick performer. Excellent image quality. Unique My Color feature. Good ergonomics. Sleek and attractive.

Macro mode did not produce good results. Flash had some problems in backlit situations.

Canon Digital Ixus 750 Review

On the face of it the Canon Digital IXUS 750 is a pretty run-of-the-mill digital camera. A 3x optical zoom lens, 7 megapixel sensor, large 2.5 inch LCD screen - on first sight, it doesn't seem...

Canon PowerShot SD550

The same size as the predecessor PowerShot SD500 model, the new Canon PowerShot SD550 features the great looks and sharp design that are a signature of Canon's ELPH cameras. Canon refers to the SD550 as having "Perpetual Curve Design", which basically...

Compact size, Solid build, In-camera image stabilization makes all lenses better for low light shooting, Same sensor as 7D, Kit lens covers 18-70mm 35mm equivalent range, Very good to excellent low-light capability, Excellent battery life, Decent...

Proprietary hot shoe, No PC sync port, No video recording (a fact of life with SLRs), Hand grip may be uncomfortably small for some users, Image noise slightly high at ISO 1600, RAW+JPEG option only saves fine-mode JPEGs. (But that's not a bad...

The Canon SD550 features a 3x, 7.7-23.1mm zoom lens, equivalent to a 37-111mm zoom on a 35mm camera. Aperture is automatically controlled, but the maximum setting ranges from f/2.8 at full wide angle to f/4.9 at full telephoto. A maximum 4x digital...

PowerShot SD550 Digital ELPH

Most of those aren't very exciting, and to be honest I don't know why Canon couldn't put the larger screen on the thing in the first place. Anyhow, other features on the SD550 that haven't changed include its 7.1 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens,...

Some corner softness; noisy images at high ISO settings ; Redeye is a problem ; LCD resolution on the low side ; Can only record about 8 minutes of VGA video due to 1GB file size limit ; Battery life could be better ; Can't swap memory cards while...

There really isn't much else to complain about. About the only thing I can come up with is the fact that you can't swap memory cards while the camera is on a tripod. Overall though, the SD550 is a heck of a compact point-and-shoot, and it gets my...
