Canon PowerShot SD950 IS

For those who don't mind paying top dollar for a point-and-shoot camera, the Canon SD950 delivers high resolution and truly impressive photos.

Loaded with features. HD video capability. Brilliant images with true color. Slick ergonomic design.

Expensive. Auto ISO Shift feature is weak.

Canon Powershot SD950 IS

At the top of Canon's Digital Elph line, the $450 SD950 IS looks stylish and is a pleasure to use. Enclosed in a titanium shell, it should handle bumps and scrapes better than the average snapshot camera. At 3.75 inches wide and just over 1 inch thick,...

Sturdy titanium body ; Captures 768-by-1024 video

Large, for a point-and-shoot, and heavy ; Very expensive for a snapshooter

It's very expensive for a pocket camera--and is too large for many pockets--but it's quite well made and performs admirably.

Canon PowerShot SD950 IS review

Sometimes, when we find ourselves running full speed forward toward what we think is the pinnacle of achievement, we suddenly realize that we've flown closer to the sun than our wings can stand. In the current state of market-driven capitalism, we do...

Sleek design with titanium casing; great image quality; optical image stabilization; face detection; optical viewfinder.

No manual exposure controls, slightly sluggish performance.

Canon's SD950 IS looks great and can take very nice images, but the digital camera's whopping 12 megapixels will leave you waiting between shots.

Canon Powershot SD950 IS Review

The Canon Powershot SD950 IS may be a bit larger than most ultra-compact but it makes up for it in image quality and performance. The 12 megapixels sensor here does show some image noise, even at ISO 200, but details are still well-kept until ISO 400...

Good preservation of image details, Nice image colors, Great white-balance, even on auto, Good image sharpness, Fast and responsive, Durable build quality

Images too contrasty and low dynamic range, Some corner softness, Above average chromatic aberrations, Noticeable distortion, Short battery life, Useless ISO 1600

Canon PowerShot SD950 IS Review

When last I visited with a Canon SD camera wearing a 900-something number, it was the SD900 with a 10 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom and no stabilization.

Good image and color quality ; High resolution with typical class noise performance ; Viewfinder ; Solid construction and build quality

Wide angle end of lens could be wider ; Battery power decline can be rapid

Still, the question arises if the improvements are significant enough to cause folks who like the 900 to trade up, or attractive enough to bring new believers to the flock
