Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX210 IS was one of our highest-rated pocket megazoom cameras of last year. Its successor, the PowerShot SX230 HS ($350 as of May 1, 2011), keeps its core strengths while adding a few notable features.

Very good image quality ; Manual exposure and focus controls ; Compact for a pocket megazoom camera ; Good high-speed shooting performance

Mediocre macro mode ; GPS drains battery quickly

Building on an already-excellent camera, the 14X-optical-zoom PowerShot SX230 HS adds a new sensor, 1080p video capture, high-speed shooting, and in-camera GPS to the mix.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a top choice if you want a long zoom lens, plus bonus features like GPS, in a camera that can fit in your pocket.

14x optical zoom lens, in a small pocketable body. Sharp images. Good low light performance. Fast. Includes GPS for geotagging photos. High-res LCD.

1080p video capture limited to 24fps. No refocusing while recording video. 16:9 widescreen LCD isn't great for shooting 4:3 still images.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review: Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

The ; HS has good low-light photo quality for its class; excellent color; shooting options that encourage experimentation; and great-looking video quality.

Its shooting performance, though good, lags behind the competition as does its GPS functionality. The battery life is short and the overall design could use some help, too.

If you want a compact megazoom with manual controls, GPS, and excellent photo quality, the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a good place to start.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS Review

Excellent High ISO performance up to the maximum 3200 setting.

Well built body that is also stylish with several color choice options ; Excellent outdoor image quality ; Versatile 14x optical zoom with a 28mm - 392mm equivalent range ; Upgraded 3.0-inch LCD is a welcomed addition ; Excellent High ISO performance...

Pop-up flash not in the greatest position; easily blocked by your left index finger ; Flash Pops up automatically in all modes, which is not always wanted ; Non-existent labeling on the 4-way controller ; Indoor image quality not up to par with other...

The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS offers some very appealing options stuffed inside its petite frame. We were pleased with the camera's overall image quality and shooting performance, with only a few annoyances, many of which have been carried over from its...

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS Review

The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS camera is a new travel-zoom camera that replaces the SX210 model. There's a 14x, 28-392mm optical zoom lens with built-in image stabilizer, 12.1 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, 3 inch LCD screen with 460k-dot...

The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS improves on the previous SX210 model primarily by offering more features at a cheaper price. In particular the addition of full 1080p HD movies makes the new SX230 a more than competent all-in-one camera for both photos and...

Low battery life; some chromatic aberration; flash pops up when powered on every time

Canon's premium compact zoom gets almost everything right. Easy enough for casual photographers but powerful enough for enthusiasts, the SX230 is an excellent camera.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS Digital Camera Review

The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS might be the perfect addition to your family if you’re looking for a slightly cheaper but just as powerful version to the SX260. This camera provides equal image and video quality and has many of the features present in the...

Canon SX230 HS

The SX230 boasts an amazing 14x lens, but image quality suffers for it.

14x optical zoom; Intuitive menu interface

Below average color accuracy; Insufficient noise reduction

At the time of this writing, the PowerShot SX230 HS has already been replaced by the SX260 HS. The newer model is $50 more, and we recommend either saving up the extra cash or, if you’re a really thorough shopper, waiting until we finish our review of...

Best compact ultra-zoom camera

At less than 8 ounces and just over an inch thick, the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS (*Est. $295) is one of the slimmest, lightest ultra-zoom cameras you can buy. Its lens telescopes from 28 mm to 392 mm -- a 14x zoom -- and reviewers say it's...

14x zoom lens, very small and light for an ultra-zoom, good image quality, even in dim rooms, full HD video, generous manual and automatic settings

Mixed reviews for GPS feature, flash always pops up when camera is turned on, weak battery
