Canon PowerShot SX50 HS: Camera or telescope?

The SX50 HS packs one of the longest zoom lenses currently available and has some very good photo quality to back it up.

The ; has an extraordinary zoom range with excellent image stabilization and fine photo quality for a megazoom; plenty of shooting modes, from full auto to full manual; raw image capture; and a hot shoe for adding an external flash.

Its lens and high-ISO picture quality make it less desirable for shooting indoors or in low light, especially without a tripod. A couple of things about the design of the controls might make shooting frustrating for some users. Outside of its long...

If you simply must have the longest zoom in the room, the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS satisfies.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS review

For the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS, the lens basically tells its whole story: a 50x zoom that goes from 24mm to 1,200mm.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Review

As you may have noticed, the 'Megapixel Wars' have calmed down a bit in recent years. That doesn't mean that camera manufacturers haven't found something else to drive up to absurd levels. In the case of 'big zoom' cameras that thing is, of course, how...

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Review

With a 50x optical zoom lens, the PowerShot SX50 has one feature that's impossible to ignore. This camera also does a pretty good job with image quality and performance in most situations, while offering a large number of advanced features. However,...

50x optical zoom is a great feature ; Zoom motor works fast, going from wide angle to full telephoto ; Popup flash provides good low light results ; Hot shoe also allows you to add an external flash if needed ; SX50 works well in fully automatic mode ;...

SX50 has smaller image sensor than what's expected in this price range ; SX50's response times are a bit choppy, depending on scene ; You'll see "busy" on the screen more than you should between shots ; LCD screen is a little small ; Sharpness and...

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Review

The Canon PowerShot SX50 HS is a brand new super-zoom camera sporting a 50x zoom lens which is equivalent to a focal length of 24-1200mm. Replacing the previous SX40 HS model, the SX50 HS features a 12 megapixel back-illuminated sensor, DIGIC 5 image...

The jaw-dropping 50x lens may get all the attention, but the PowerShot SX50 HS' other new features are what makes this Canon's best super-zoom camera yet. It's impossible to review the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS without focusing on its 24-1200mm focal...

Canon SX50 Review

Boasting a whopping 50x optical zoom range (24-1200mm equivalent) and excellent image quality for its class, the Canon SX50 HS may not only be the company's finest ultrazoom offering to date, but also the best ultrazoom we've ever tested. Improved...

50x optical zoom with whopping 24-1200mm-equivalent reach; Excellent image quality for its class; 2.8-inch vari-angle LCD; Ergonomic design and controls; Improved image stabilization and Zoom Framing Assist; Shoots RAW; Full 1080p HD video

Poor low-light AF performance; Image quality deteriorates at ISO 800 and above; Sluggish cycle times; Below average battery life

With a 50x optical zoom that delivers an amazing 24-1200mm-equivalent range, the Canon SX50 HS brings distant subjects up close and personal -- and it does so with intelligence and grace. Hand-held shots at full zoom and in good light are relatively...

The robust and relatively heavy body of the Canon SX50 HS has a metal-based chassis and is designed like a small SLR system. A large handle on the right-hand side of the body gives a stable grip and allows for comfortable handling when shooting. The...

Extreme ultra zoom lens (50x) with up to 1200mm (35mm film equivalent) ; Very robust body ; Easy, fast SLR-like handling ; Very good resolution, noise, light falloff, and distortion results ; Many manual settings for creative work ; Full HD video

Low-resolution electronic viewfinder (202,000 RGB dots) ; Smallish LCD screen (2.8”) with average resolution (461,000 RGB dots)

Digital Camera Review: Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

With this camera you move out of the compact point-and-shoot range and into larger bodied cameras with more DSLR-like features and qualities. The most impressive feature of the 12.1MP SX50 HS is its 50x wide angle zoom lens. 50X is a lot of zoom for...

($479), which has a whopping 50X, 24 - 1200 mm lens

Very good photo quality for a super zoom ; Enormous 50X, 24 - 1200 mm lens ; Optical image stabilization, with Intelligent IS feature that selects the right IS mode for you ; Sharp, rotating 2.8" LCD display with 461,000 pixels offers good outdoor and...

Likes to clip highlights (hint: use DR correction) ; Redeye a problem (though removal tool in playback mode helps) ; Electronic viewfinder isn't great ; Lens is on the slow side (in terms of maximum aperture); tripod almost a necessity when shooting at...

If you're looking for a camera that can really cover some distance, then you should certainly be looking at the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS. With its 24 - 1200 mm lens, there's really no scene it can't capture. I wouldn't say it's a great camera for low...
