Casio Exilim Pro review: Casio Exilim Pro

5X optical zoom; 22 Best Shot settings; automatic macro; zoom is fully functional during video recording; 5-second buffer for late-reaction video shots.

Doesn't perform well in low light; zoom is sometimes audible on video recordings; can be awkward for large hands to grasp.

This camera comes close to successfully combining high-quality photos with acceptable-quality video.

Casio Exilim EX-P505

Megapixels: 5, Included Memory: On Board, Media Format: Secure Digital, Maximum Resolution: 2560 x 1920 pixels, Inc...

Hybrid design means you only need to carry one device for stills and video. Very good flash for stills. Some powerful options for capturing what happened shortly before and after the shutter release/record button is pressed.

Test shots are a bit dark. No quick-review button to view photos. No optical viewfinder. White-balance and focus slow to readjust in movie mode.

Although you might not want to throw away your camcorder just yet, the Casio EX-P505 is part of a new breed of camera, the hybrid, shooting good 5-megapixel snapshots and 640-by-480 MPEG-4 videos. It performs both jobs well.

Casio Exilim EX-P505

Though it looks like one of the many new long zoom digital cameras currently on the market, Casio's EX-P505 Zoom is a lot smaller; certainly smaller than it looks in pictures. It is Palm-size, though it has a big protrusion due to its...

Compact size, Solid build, In-camera image stabilization makes all lenses better for low light shooting, Same sensor as 7D, Kit lens covers 18-70mm 35mm equivalent range, Very good to excellent low-light capability, Excellent battery life, Decent...

Proprietary hot shoe, No PC sync port, No video recording (a fact of life with SLRs), Hand grip may be uncomfortably small for some users, Image noise slightly high at ISO 1600, RAW+JPEG option only saves fine-mode JPEGs. (But that's not a bad...

The Casio Exilim Pro EX-P505 features a 5x, 6.3 - 31.5mm lens, equivalent to a 38 - 190mm lens on a 35mm camera. Maximum aperture ranges from f/3.3 to f/3.6, depending on the zoom position, and can be controlled automatically or manually. Focus covers...

Casio Exilim EX-Z55

What's in the Box

Nice combination of still + video recording features ; 5X zoom in a compact body ; Flip-out, rotating 2" LCD display ; Robust performance ; Full manual controls ; Excellent movie mode; stereo sound, optical zoom can be used, numerous ways to record ;...

Overpriced ; Cheap plastic body ; Images are too noisy/grainy; some corner/edge softness ; Redeye a problem ; LCD doesn't "gain up" in low light ; Poor low light focusing / no AF-assist lamp ; Can't swap memory cards while camera is on a tripod ; Poor...

While an intriguing concept, I think there are better cameras out there than the Exilim EX-P505. With a little work, Casio could have a real winner on their hands, but for now I think you could spend $500 on something better.

The menu is quite easy to navigate and accessed at the push of a button. There are plenty of options for shooting, along side the standard 'auto' function. The EX-P505 has 8 white balance settings, two of which are fluorescent modes and a manual option

The Exilim Pro EX-P505's combination of photo and video features sounds promising, but its image quality is mediocre on stills, and its video doesn't measure up.
