Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55 review

PC Magazine checks out the Exilim Zoom EX-Z55, Casio's 5 megapixel ultracompact (roughly the size of a credit card in length and width) digital camera which has a large 2.5-inch LCD, good startup time, a 3x optical zoom, uses SD memory cards and a...

Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55

The Z55 has the sharpest images we've seen in a camera this size, a big LCD, Casio's great menus and features, and reasonable speed. But the images produced by this camera don't quite measure up to those of of the Canon Powershot SD300.

Sharp, well exposed images. Tiny and lightweight, extended battery life, very good menu functions, and wide variety of preset shooting configurations.

LCD blacks out while image is processed. Images show fall off at the edges of the frame, flash shots unevenly illuminated.

Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55

The Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55 fits into the ultra-compact family of digital cameras, being about the same size as a credit card at just 8cms by 6cms and weighing a mere 130g. Despite its diminutive dimensions, Casio have still managed to include bot

If you're looking for an ultra-compact camera then you should seriously consider the Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55. Casio may not be the first name that you associate with digital cameras, but they have definitely produced a very capable camera in the EX-Z55.

Outsized LCD provides a nice view, but pictures disappoint

The Exilim EX-Z55 is compact and lightweight, yet it offers a generous 2.5-inch LCD. The bright, outsized monitor is nice, but the picture quality fell short of expectations.

Light and compact ; large LCD ; live RGB histogram ; 23 scene modes ; useful Business Shot mode ; automatic Macro mode

Noisy pictures ; no continuous shooting mode ; poor video quality ; need cradle for recharging and picture transfer

The EX-Z55 has 23 scene modes in all, including a Business Shot mode for straightening pictures of business cards and white boards in-camera. Manual controls are limited to manual focus, exposure compensation (which you access via a menu), white...

The CasioExilim EX-Z55 ($449) is an ultra-compact 5 Megapixelcamera with a large 2.5" LCD display and class-leadingbattery life. A slightly cheaper model, the EX-Z50 ($399),has a 2-inch screen and slightly lower battery life. Both cameras make up...

Very good photo quality (though see issues below), Ultra-thin, stylish metal body, Big LCD for a small camera (see issues below), Robust performance, Tons of scene modes, Amazing battery life, Cool playback mode features

Softness around edges and corners of photos; moderate barrel distortion, Redeye, LCD only "gains up" in certain Best Shot modes, most of which require a tripod; LCD resolution isn't great either, Poor low light focusing / no AF-assist lamp, Can't swap...

It is often foolhardy to apply a fixed specification grid over a range of products and pick a clear winner. Many products are built to satisfy ãchecklist shoppers,ä packing in all the buzzwords of the day without a thought to making them all easily...
