Kodak EasyShare M381 review

As point-and-shoot ultracompacts go, the attraction for the Kodak EasyShare M381 lies in its simplicity. Beyond its 5x zoom, 3-inch LCD, and quite consistent Smart Capture auto mode, the M381 has little to offer. Look at the glut of competition at its...

Good photo quality up to ISO 200; easy to operate.

Cheap feel; no optical image stabilization; narrow lens compared to the competition; noticeable photo quality drop-off at ISO 400.

Though it's missing a couple of key features for its price, the Kodak EasyShare M381 is a capable and uncomplicated ultracompact camera.

Kodak EasyShare M381

The 12-megapixel Kodak EasyShare M381 ($170 as of 11/10/09) is a good low-priced point-and-shoot camera for anyone who doesn't want to fuss with a lot of controls--as long as they're also willing to deal with a few of the camera's quirks.

Perfect Touch feature fixes poorly lit shots ; Easy to use

Shutter and zoom lag a bit ; No HD video shooting ; Limited manual controls

This bargain-priced point-and-shoot camera has quirks and limitations, but it's a decent no-fuss option for beginners.

Review: Kodak EasyShare M381 digital camera

This bargain-priced point-and-shoot camera has quirks and limitations, but it's a decent no-fuss option for beginners.

The 5X optical zoom (35mm to 175mm) EasyShare M381 looks and feels like many basic point-and-shoot cameras geared toward easy operation. The top of the camera hosts the shutter button, the mode dial, the power button, and a useful flash button for...

Kodak's 12Mp EasyShare M381 is an inexpensive point-and-shoot camera for anyone who doesn't want to fuss with a lot of controls - as long as you're also willing to deal with a few of the camera's quirks.

The Kodak EasyShare M381 is fully automated, easy to use and affordable, making it a decent point-and-shoot for anyone who doesn’t want to have to deal with camera settings. It has a few usability quirks and it lacks excitement, but it takes a decent...

A smart addition to the EasyShare range

With competent auto correct technology and instant post-production techniques that make up for any technical shortcomings the user may have, the M381 is the ideal compact companion for novices or occasional snappers.

Consumer review (cnet.com)

"Overall, not a good value."

Fairly intuitive and easy to use. For this price range, the zoom is excellent and the video sound quality is impressive. LCD is bright and usable.

This camera will only take acceptable-to-good photos in daylight. Low light performance is noisy and very poor--virtually unusable, I would argue. Also, autofocus is slow and unreliable. It is very difficult to take decent photos with this camera.
