Kodak Z740

Excellent color, generally very good exposure, Versatile 38-380mm zoom range, Very compact, Good handling and easy access to most photographic controls, Good flash performance, Good white balance in most situations, Both screen and EVF work well in low...

Slightly soft images and lower than average resolution, Can feel unresponsive in use, Over-aggressive noise reduction at ISO 200+ (very soft ISO 400 images), Some problems with high contrast/wide dynamic range scenes, Lack of image stabilization limits...

I liked the Z740 a lot more than I expected to; first impressions after months of using the Canon S2 IS and Sony H1 weren't that positive - the Kodak is so small and lightweight that it feels almost toy-like.

Kodak EasyShare Z740 Review

The first quarter of 2005 saw Kodak expanding its 'big zoom' range with three new 'Z series' EasyShare cameras, including two 10x optical, 5MP models; the Z7590 (a minor update of the DX7590 adding compatibility with the latest printer dock) and the...

Kodak EasyShare Z740

10X zoom lens; manual-exposure controls; versatile burst-shooting mode.

No image stabilization; EVF blanks between exposures; average image quality.

A camera with some appeal for budding photo enthusiasts on a budget.

Kodak Easyshare Z740 Camera

Kodak's $380 EasyShare Z740 is designed to simplify the sharing of photos through prints, e-mail, and an online gallery. The camera's share button, included software, and optional snapshot printer all seem targeted at PC-phobic beginners. This seems at...

Easy photo sharing Powerful zoom

Autofocus is unreliable

Once you've connected the printer to your PC, you must press the transfer button to fire up the EasyShare software and upload your photos or send copies via e-mail. The software works with Kodak's EasyShare Gallery Web site (formerly Ofoto), where you...

Easy photo sharing ; Powerful zoom

Autofocus is unreliable

The Z740's easy photo sharing and powerful zoom are enticing, but tentative long-distance focusing reduces the latter's value

Kodak EasyShare Z740

The Kodak EasyShare Z740's ease of use simply does not make up for its subpar image quality.

Long (10X) zoom lens. Good ergonomics. Lots of dedicated analog controls. Plenty of manual controls. Good menu system and on-screen help. LCD automatically adjusts to lighting conditions.

No image stabilization. Electronic viewfinder is terrible. Images are noisy and have lots of artifacts. Joystick can be difficult to use.

Digital Cameras - Kodak EasyShare Z740 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

Kodak's EasyShare digital cameras have consistently proven to be among the easiest to use of any I've tested, and the Z740 is no exception. Its fully automatic exposure control performs surprisingly well in a wide variety of conditions, and the range...

Kodak EasyShare Z740

You can buy the camera alone ($379) or as part of a "Digital Photo Solution" ($479) which includes Kodak's Printer Dock 3. I reviewed the latter, so you can expect a few comments about the printer along the way

Very good photo quality in most situations ; LCD and EVF usable in low light ; Many manual controls ; Supports conversion lenses, filters ; AF-assist lamp; good low light focusing ; EasyShare system (in-camera and with bundled software) makes it very...

Night shots seem soft and "overprocessed ; Camera didn't fare well in the macro test due to white balance issues; here's why we need custom white balance ; VGA movie mode quality isn't the best; frame rate is poor too ; Flimsy plastic door over SD card...

Bottom line: I like the Z740 and it gets my recommendation, unless you take a lot of photos under unusual lighting. Fans of long exposures may also want to consider another camera, especially if my samples bothered you. While the Z740 isn't as good as...

Kodak have really applied the 'easy' part of EashyShare with the menu navigation one of the simplest on the market for its range, and one of the simplest I've reviewed. A dial on the back and a handful of buttons around the 1.8 inch LCD is all any...
