Nikon 1 V1 Review

We really have difficulty recommending the V1 as tested simply because it's wildly expensive, and the results don't measure up to the competition.

We really have difficulty recommending the V1 as tested simply because it’s wildly expensive, and the results don’t measure up to the competition. Think about this for a moment: you can buy a 24-MP Sony NEX-7 for $1,500, with an 18-55mm lens and a...

Review: Nikon 1 V1

With the V1, Nikon debuts new less-is-more thinking.

Dedicated electronic viewfinder. Hot shoe for flash. Two lenses are included in the box

No pop-up flash. Small proprietary CX sensor. Horrid manual focus

Nikon V1

The Nikon V1 is priced like a high-end mirrorless camera and delivers solid performance, but doesn't offer the level of controls or lens options that demanding photographers require.

Eye-level electronic viewfinder. Fast, accurate autofocus. Silent operation. Expansion port. Excellent high ISO performance.

Expensive. No built-in flash. Very limited lens selection. Few physical controls.

When the 1 system was announced last fall, Nikon showed off quite a few prototype lenses and promised to deliver them to help round out the system's capabilities. As of this writing, no new lenses have been announced, leaving you with only four lenses...

Nikon 1 V1 / J1 Review

Nikon's entry into the mirrorless interchangeable lens market late last year was widely anticipated, but the products that were finally announced took a lot of people by surprise. Nikon has created an entirely new system based around a relatively small...

Nikon 1 V1 Review

The Nikon 1 V1 is a compact system camera featuring a 10-megapixel “CX” format sensor and the all-new Nikon 1 lens mount. Boasting continuous shooting speeds of up to 60 frames per second at full resolution, Full HD video capture, an ultra-fast hybrid...

"If you want to shoot anything that moves fast, get a DSLR." Such was the advice once given to beginners inquiring what camera to buy for shooting their pet at play or their kids at sports. And it was good advice. Digital compact cameras have never...

Nikon V1

Small lenses keep the slightly larger Nikon V1 in the compact range, image quality is high for the resolution, and the camera is a kick to use. Enthusiasts may be bugged by the lack of a feature or two, but once they start taking pictures most will...

Good image quality; Good quality lens; Full HD videos; Lightning fast AF; Fun to use

Mode dial turns easily; Missing "modern" features like panorama, HDR; Somewhat heavy; Sluggish shot-to-shot cycle times; Proprietary external flash

Nikon V1 Review

A great first entry, but needs improvements.

Solid build, excellent EVF, Motion Snapshot mode is gimmicky but a nice feature, Smart Photo Selector is great for fast moving scenes, Continuous shooting at 60fps provides exceptional speed for novice users, both mechanical and (silent) electronic...

No manual focus ring on lens and digitally manually zooming is cumbersome, rear LCD doesn't accurately represent exposure compensation in Live View, some basic options are hidden in sub-menus and no special 'art filter' effects

On the left we have the USB and AV out port, the mini-HDMI port and the external mic input jack. On the bottom we have the battery and SD card slots.

Nikon 1 V1: Lab Test Results & Comments

The Nikon V1 camera is designed and sized like a compact camera. It offers a new lens mount system for the new Nikon 1 lenses and offers two viewfinder systems—an EVF (electronic viewfinder) with very high resolution (1.44 million RGB dots), which...

Very compact CSC system with interchangeable lenses ; Stylish body ; Extremely fast (focusing, burst mode, video modes, etc.) ; Very good resolution results ; Good noise results for a compact camera

Handling (like manual focusing) is limited by the very compact size and need for additional accessories (flash system)

The noise results are very good for a compact camera and on an average level for CSC or SLR systems. In lower ISO speed settings (100 to 400) the camera is nearly noise free with very smooth images, despite the small image sensor (CX format). Color...

Nikon V1

The Nikon V1 is a good start for Nikon, but can it keep up with the heavy hitters in its class?

Solid color accuracy when white balance is accurate; Dynamic range is quite good in bright light

Auto white balance has real trouble under artificial lighting; High ISO performance is limited compared to APS-C competition
