Nikon Coolpix 4800

Great zoom range; fast zooming; decent electronic viewfinder performance; useful scene modes; excellent red-eye prevention.

Few manual controls; lots of visual noise in images; no manual exposure controls.

A useful wide-to-supertelephoto zoom range and a competent EVF are the key attractions of this 4-megapixel point-and-shoot compact.

Nikon Coolpix 4800

The 4MP Nikon Coolpix 4800 is a good camera, but falls short of being a great one. That said, it is a reasonably priced alternative to more expensive superzooms.

Powerful 8.3X optical zoom lens. Best Shot Selector feature really works.

Slow shooter for a compact camera (though average for a superzoom, which this is approaching). Flash images dull, EVF murky. Smallish LCD.

Nikon CoolPix 4800 Review

Announced in September 2004, the Coolpix 4800 represents the latest in a long line of Nikon compact cameras that stretches all the way back to the late 1990's, and is Nikon's first budget 'super zoom' camera. Although it sits in the same range as the...

High resolution, lots of detail Sharp 8.3x zoom with good contrast Bright, vivid colors Simple point-and-shoot operation Good price Excellent macro capabilities Lightweight Good battery life, option to use 2CR5 batteries Good flash exposures and fast...

Images quite noisy even at ISO 50 Some focus errors in low light at long end of zoom No exposure information in record or playback mode Mediocre screen and EVF Some exposure problems in high contrast/very bright scenes Occasional white balance errors...

Viewed in isolation the Coolpix 4800 would be a very impressive camera indeed (and as you can see from the samples gallery on the next page it's capable of great results). There's little to really complain about here - especially given the sub-$400...

Nikon Coolpix 4800

What's in the Box

Compact body for an ultra zoom ; Very good photo quality (though a bit noisy) ; AF-assist lamp ; Top-notch macro ability ; Many scene modes ; LCD/EVF usable in low light ; Handy BSS feature ; Supports proprietary and "regular" batteries ; Optional...

Slow AF speeds, noticeable shutter lag, shot-to-shot delays can be annoying ; 8.3X zoom is on the low end of things in the ultra zoom market ; Aside from white balance, no manual controls ; To get to slowest shutter speeds you must give up control over...

There are a lot of choices out there in the ultra zoom market, and I think there are better cameras available than the Coolpix 4800.

Nikon Coolpix 4800 Digital camera

The 4800 may be aimed at the more amateur end of the market but it includes some new and interesting features.

Internal memory buffer, ED glass zoom lens

Delicate lens cover, memory partition can confuse

Overall the 4800 is a good option for the beginner since the outfit can be operated without need of a additional SD card. The basic menus are easy to understand although the deeper submenus may need the perusal of the manual. Plenty of Mega pixels for...
