Nikon Coolpix 5000

As a fifth-generation refinement, the Nikon Coolpix 5000 is probably one of the best, most powerful and versatile consumer digital cameras on the market. Nikon has worked out most of the rough edges and engineering quirks of its predecessors (the 900...

Nikon Coolpix 5000 review

If you're a digital-photo enthusiast, you've probably had your eye on Nikon's 5.24-megapixel Coolpix 5000 since long before it hit the shelves. But if you're a casual snapshooter, you'd do best to look elsewhere. This is a sophisticated camera made for...

High resolution; extensive feature set; compact design and comfortable ergonomics; fold-out-and-swivel LCD; compatible with IBM Microdrives.

A few important controls are buried; lens not as powerful as competitors'; noticeable chromatic aberration and JPEG artifacts in images.

Some may not like this camera's menu-driven operation or modest lens, but it offers an extensive feature set and flexible design.

Nikon Coolpix 5000 Review

The Coolpix 5000 was first announced back in September this year. Its design with a compact metal body, extending lens and flip-out and twist LCD surprised quite a few Coolpix aficionados. Clearly the Coolpix 5000 doesn't follow the previous line of...

Good metering, good automatic white balance, average resolution capability Control over all processing algorithm parameters: contrast, saturation, sharpness Good build quality, small and compact design Wide angle zoom (28 mm) Concept of three user...

Slow startup time Chromatic aberrations just as visible as previous Coolpix digital cameras High noise levels from ISO 200 upwards Video camera like clipping of highlights ('video camera' look to some images) Stuck pixel (on the camera I had for...

Nikon Coolpix 5000 Digital Camera Review: Intro and Highlights

Coolscan 5000 Review

Still modest footprint, reasonably fast scans (though slowed with ICE and other options), superb results when set correctly, USB 2.0 universality.

Supplied software is still a bit awkward, ICE doesn't work perfectly, takes some time to find optimal setup.

Nikon's mid-level desktop scanner with ICE, GEM, ROC, and DEE, the Coolscan 5000 is capable of even the most demanding scan work.

Nikon Coolpix 5000

Was the Coolpix 5000 worth the wait? Read on and find out

All the manual controls you'll ever need ; Usually excellent photo quality ; CompactFlash Type II slot - Microdrive works fine ; Handy swiveling LCD ; Lens is very "wide" for a consumer digicam ; Hot shoe for external flash ; Lots of external lens options

Blew out the sky in too many pictures, especially with spot metering ; Some chromatic aberrations ; Rear controls cluttered ; Optical viewfinder hard to use when LCD is not flipped out ; Proprietary battery costs a lot and doesn't last long, especially...

Overall, I recommend the Nikon Coolpix 5000, though I have some serious issues with it. On the plus side, the photo quality is usually excellent, the feature-set is top notch, and the hot shoe and Microdrive support are welcomed. My problems with the...

Nikon Coolpix 5000

A few issues with the Coolpix 5000 give us pause, such as the slowness of the lens at the far end of the zoom, the lack of an autofocus assist, and the flash meter's clumsy placement. But if you want to print an image at 11 by 14 inches, or print a...
