Nikon Coolpix 5200

There's a lot to like about the Nikon Coolpix 5200, and it's jammed with great features.

Small, solid, and stylish. Flash shots are well exposed. Powerful features (in-camera red-eye fix, last-five-shot buffer, best-shot selector, etc.).

Small LCD. Daylight shots tend to be underexposed. Minor color-accuracy issues. Menus can be confusing.

Nikon Coolpix 5200 Review

Announced in February 2004 (alongside an otherwise identical 4MP camera, the Coolpix 4200), the Coolpix 5200 represents the latest in a long line of ever-smaller Nikon compact cameras that stretches all the way back to the late 1990's. Although the...

Excellent resolution - especially for an ultra-compact Clean images with only moderate noise levels Good white balance (except under incandescent light) Realistic color Very compact, excellent build quality Pretty fast operation Huge range of...

Images look soft (though they respond well to unsharp masking) Images can be over-contrasty - muddy shadows (again, the detail is there but needs fixing in Photoshop) Occasional focus problems at the long end of the zoom Finest quality JPEG is still...

The Coolpix 5200 is a little gem of a camera that proves Nikon is not merely dabbling in consumer-level cameras, and it's the best proper compact they've produced in years. Design, build and ease of use are excellent, and there is a surprising amount...

Nikon Coolpix 5200

Excellent red-eye prevention; versatile burst mode; simple operation; solid macro capabilities.

Tiny optical viewfinder; slow autofocus in dim light.

The Nikon Coolpix 5200 is an easy-to-use ultracompact for newbies who want to print big, but image-quality-conscious buyers should stay away.

Nikon Coolpix 5200

A 4 Megapixel version, known as the Coolpix 4200, is also available. It has less impressive continuous shooting and movie modes, though

Compact metal body ; AF-assist lamp ; Impressive macro ability ; VGA (30 fps) movie mode ; Many scene modes ; Easy to use ; LCD usable in low light

Images are soft and somewhat noisy; some corner blurriness as well ; Redeye reduction feature didn't seem to help much ; Menu and camera settings inaccessible while camera saves photos to memory ; Aside from white balance, no manual controls ; No real...

While not the best choice, the CP5200 is worth a look if you're after a high resolution point-and-shoot camera. Just be sure to research the competition carefully!
