Nikon Coolpix 8800

If you need (and are willing to pay for) sharper images than the other more consumer-oriented superzooms can deliver, this is the camera for you.

Longest optical zoom (10X) of any 8MP camera. Image stabilization lets you do handheld shots more easily at extreme telephoto. Super-sharp images. Articulated LCD. Hot shoe. Shoots in RAW and TIFF modes.

Bulky, heavy and slow. Flash images underexposed. Small LCD.

Nikon Coolpix 8800 - digital camera review

Intro Vibration reduction headlines the feature set for this 8-megapixel Coolpix 8700 replacement, which also includes a longer zoom lens (10X vs. 8X), support for Nikon's i-TTL SB600 and SB800 external flash units, improved design, and a...

10X zoom lens; effective vibration reduction; excellent red-eye prevention; ultrahigh-speed 30fps burst mode.

Spotty image quality; viewfinder freezes and blanks under certain circumstances.

An 8-megapixel megazoom with image stabilization, the 8800 is a solid, though not spectacular, enthusiast option.

Nikon Coolpix 8800 Digital Camera Camera

The Coolpix 8800 combines powerful (8-megapixel) imaging resolution and a long (10X) optical zoom. An update of the Coolpix 8700 (which has an 8X zoom), the 8800 looks and operates much like its predecessor, with the same bulky, black body and a lens...

Like most other advanced digital cameras of recent vintage, the 8800 is easy for photographers of all experience levels to use. Set to fully automatic mode--which disables nearly all of the camera's exposure options--the 8800 becomes a very expensive...

Nikon Coolpix 8800 Review

The Coolpix 8800 was announced along with the 8400 and 4800 on the 16th September in the run-up to Photokina 2004. It's the first ten times optical zoom eight megapixel digital camera and it's also Nikon's first consumer digital camera with Vibration...

Biggest zoom of any eight megapixel, with Vibration Reduction Sharp lens, at both ends of zoom range, respectable resolution Excellent automatic white balance Good macro coverage, although perhaps soft corners & distortion Good ergonomics, sticky...

Slower than expected startup time Some minor purple fringing (in the order of a pixel at worse) Slow CF write times Limited latitude of image parameter adjustment No record review histogram No CF card included AF Assist lamp not effective, can not be...

The Coolpix 8800 is out to prove that it's a credible alternative to the new cheaper digital SLR's and a set of lenses. From a practicality stand point it certainly delivers, in a package not much bigger than the smallest D-SLR you get eight megapixels...

Nikon Coolpix 8800 Review

Nikon Coolpix 8800 review

The Nikon Coolpix 8800 camera is a logical step after the break-through forced by the introduction and availability of the first 8 Megapixel digital cameras in 2004. Nikon went from 5 to 8 Megapixels, a giant step if we look at the development which...

Nikon Coolpix 8800

This review has been completed using a production model Coolpix 8800. Product shots have been reshot where necessary, and all sample photos are from the production camera

Very good photo quality ; 10X optical zoom with very effective image stabilization ; Superb build quality, save for the memory card slot cover ; Full manual controls (and then some) ; Flip-out, rotating LCD display ; Excellent macro mode ; LCD/EVF...

Sluggish performance for a $1000 camera; average startup and focusing times, above-average shot-to-shot delay, unimpressive continuous shooting mode, slow image playback ; Above-average noise and barrel distortion ; Included RAW conversion software...

If photo quality and manual controls are higher on your "must have" list than camera performance, I recommend the Coolpix 8800. For the people who are really after fast action shooting, I point you to the digital SLRs I just mentioned.
