Nikon Coolpix L5 review

main content Sometimes, the appeal of simplicity is too hard to ignore. That could explain why we've seen a growing number of cameras that combine a very short list of features with lots of automation to provide a relatively thought-free shooting...

5X optical zoom; lens-shift vibration reduction; easy to use.

Slow performance; sensitivity tops out at ISO 400; poor image quality.

The Nikon Coolpix L5 mixes simple operation with a couple of cool features, but slow performance and iffy image quality make this camera a poor choice.

Nikon Coolpix L5 Digital Camera - Express Review

If you're an entry-level photographer happy to let your digital camera do all the work, the Nikon Coolpix L5 may be right for you. With a 7.2-megapixel sensor and a 5x optical zoom with Nikon's lens-shift Vibration Reduction technology, the Coolpix L5...

Understated, stylish, and relatively compact body ; Long, 5x optical (38-190mm 35mm equivalent) zoom lens ; Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction) technology helps steady long zoom shots ; Images had nice, warm color with smooth, film-like dynamic range ;...

Max ISO sensitivity limited to 400 and always set automatically ; otherwise camera stays locked at ISO 80, This iteration of Nikon's VR Optical image stabilization does not seem as effective as competing systems, Slower than average operation speed ;...

How does the Coolpix L5 compare with other cameras in its class? Find out now in our review

Decent photo quality (but see issues below) ; 5X zoom lens in a fairly compact body ; Optical image stabilization ; Large 2.5" LCD ; Powerful flash ; Redeye not a problem ; Tons of scene modes; in-camera help system ; Handy D-Lighting and Best Shot...

Soft photos with fuzzy details ; Since ISO is automatic, photos can be noisier than desired ; No manual controls (save for white balance) ; Audio/video sync problem in movie mode ; No AF-assist lamp; poor low light focusing ; Low resolution LCD ; No...

All things considered, the Nikon Coolpix L5 came out being pretty average. While there is much to like about it, it has more than its share of flaws. What I'm getting at here is that while the L5 isn't a bad camera per se, there are are better options...

Nikon Coolpix L5 Digital Camera Review

The design of Coolpix L5 is different than the one of L4 or L6 and I must admit that I personally don't like it. It's the 5x optical zoom that first catches my attention (not 3x like most of the cameras in this range). Then, the optical vibration...

Nikon Coolpix L5 Review

The appeal of the Nikon Coolpix L5 is unfortunately only external. Despite being well specified and well built, the L5 lacks in image quality and performance. The most serious limitation of this digital camera is the inability to set ISO sensitivity.

Accurate exposure, Powerful flash, Good LCD visibility, Effective redeye reduction, Solid build quality

ISO cannot be manually selected, Trouble focusing in low light, Barrel distortion at wide-angle, Noticeable edge softness, Low resolution LCD

Nikon Coolpix L5 Digital Camera Review

If it's true that “good things come in small packages”, the Nikon Coolpix L5 has the small part down pat.  Open the L5 box and you'll find a camera that's about the size of a pack of cigarettes, which makes for easy carrying options.

Nikon Coolpix L5 7.2MP Digital Camera

Not everyone wants an expensive camera. Nikon realizes this, and their answer is the L series. We are taking a look at the recently launched L5, boasting a huge 7.2 megapixels!

Another important test is to see how the camera handles chromatic aberration, or purple fringing. One test I find works quite well is taking a closeup picture of the Nikon logo on their D-SLR's, because fringing and bleeding tends to happen frequently...
