Nikon Coolpix P900 review: Expansive 83x zoom range dwarfs all other megazooms

It might not be the best camera, but if you simply must have the longest zoom lens available for the least amount of money, the P900 wins.

The Nikon Coolpix P900 features an unmatched 83x zoom lens allowing you to use it for just about anything from close-ups and landscapes to portraits to birding and wildlife photography. It has a decent electronic viewfinder, flip-out rotating...

It lacks features more advanced users might want like raw image capture, a hot shoe and mic jack. Images are soft and lack fine detail when fully zoomed in. The autofocus system can be hit or miss and is slow to focus in low light. The lens does make...

It's not the best megazoom around, but the Nikon Coolpix P900's lens is remarkable and if you need the most zoom on a compact camera, it's the winner.

Nikon Coolpix P900

The Nikon Coolpix P900 boasts the longest zoom range of any camera on the market, but a lack of detail at higher ISOs holds it back.

83x zoom lens. Excellent image stabilization system. Full manual controls. Eye-level EVF. Vari-angle LCD. Quick autofocus. In-camera GPS and Wi-Fi. 1080p60 video capture.

Detail suffers at moderate ISOs. No Raw support. Long recovery times after burst shooting. Large and heavy. No hot shoe. External charger not included.

Performance and Conclusions Nikon has addressed some of the performance issues that plague its P600 , but there's still some work to be done. First, the good news. The P900 starts and captures an in-focus image in about 1.6 seconds when the lens is set...

Nikon Coolpix P900

Considering it has a jaw-dropping 83x optical zoom lens, the Nikon Coolpix P900 is an attention-grabbing ultra zoom camera. No camera currently on the market can match the P900's zoom range of 24-2000mm. Unfortunately, this model's image quality is...

Largest optical zoom lens on the market in a fixed lens camera at 83x ; Good vibration reduction system allows for hand holding the camera for some scenes, even with zoom fully extended ; Fast autofocus performance at wide angle lens setting ; Good...

Small image sensor measuring 1/2.3-inch ; Image quality and image sharpness just don't match up to other models in this price range ; Low light image quality could be better ; ISO range is limited to 6400 ; ISO performance is well below average versus...

Nikon Coolpix P900

Nikon Coolpix P900 megazoom camera : Nikon introduces the Coolpix P900 superzoom, which boasts an incredible 83x optical zoom, capturing details not visible to the naked eye. The astonishingly ultra-high-power optical zoom covers from 24mm to 2000mm...

Nikon Coolpix P900 Review

The Nikon Coolpix P900 is a bridge camera which features the current market leading zoom ratio of 83x optical zoom. That gives you an equivalent of 24 - 2000mm in 35mm terms. There's also a Dynamic Fine Zoom - a type of digital zoom - which boosts this...

Using zoom ratios seems to be the new way to sell cameras where once it was all about the megapixels. Here on the Nikon Coolpix P900 we have an 83x optical zoom, which is currently the market leader. However, to get to that kind of ratio, you need to...

Nikon P900 Review

With unprecedented optical zoom range for a fixed lens camera, extending all the way to a 2000mm eq. optical reach, and with an approachable price tag of $600, the Nikon P900 is a great value for anyone needing extensive zoom range in an all-in-one...

Farthest zoom reach for a fixed lens camera (2000mm eq.); Good image quality for its class; Good vibration reduction; Fast aperture at wide angle (f/2.8); Excellent value for the price

No RAW file recording; Limited capabilities in low light, including struggling with autofocus; Lens not as sharp at full tele end; No hot shoe

Nikon Coolpix P900 Review: Extreme Close-Up!

With an 83x zoom, the Nikon Coolpix P900 will get you closer to the action than any other bridge camera.

Longest zoom range ; Excellent image stabilization ; Good overall photo quality ; Fares well in low light ; Clear electronic viewfinder

Details sometimes appear a bit soft ; Quite bulky and heavy ; Pricey, Lacks RAW image capture

The Nikon Coolpix P900 has the longest zoom lens by far in its class and also provides great optics, but they come at a high price.

Nikon Coolpix P900 Digital Camera Review

Have superzooms gone too far? Nikon doesn't think so

To be honest, I was surprised by how much I didn't mind shooting with the P900. However, the images—while okay-looking at small sizes—were never really as good as I wanted them to be on closer inspection. I can see how it's appealing for some people to...

Nikon Coolpix P900

The Nikon Coolpix P900 is prosumer ultra-zoom with an unmatched 2000mm reach, starting at an ultra-wide 24mm, for 83X optical zoom. This digital camera is truly packed with features, including a complete set of manual controls and advanced features...

Smooth usable output until ISO 1600, Very consistent image sharpness, Highly effective optical image stabilization, Virtually no chromatic aberrations, Very low optical distortion, Dual control-dials and zoom controllers, Good overall handling, Great...

Slight image softness from base ISO, Details smudged from ISO 800+, Below average color and WB accuracy, Dim telephoto aperture noticeably slows AF, Unresponsive while writing, 1s delay when starting video capture, Slow access to ISO, Tiny low-contrast...

The 83X optical zoom on the Nikon Coolpix P900 is far ahead of the competition, covering an ultra-wide 24mm to a super-telephoto 2000mm focal-length, besting not only other ultra-zoom but also any lens on the market, even when considering crop-factor!...

Nikon P900 review

Unleash your inner paparazzo with the world's first bridge camera to feature an 83x optical zoom

Huge zoom range ; Articulating screen ; Inbuilt Wi-Fi and NFC

No raw shooting ; Screen not touch sensitive ; Expensive

The P900 is the longest-zoom bridge camera in the world – for now, at least – but it's also big, heavy and expensive. Image quality at shorter focal lengths is good but falls away at high zooms settings.
