Nikon D600 Review

This is hands-down one of the best DSLRs we've ever tested.

This is hands-down one of the best DSLRs we’ve ever tested. Picture quality is simply great, with accurate colors that really pop. You can enlarge a nicely exposed shot 100 percent and spend hours pixel-peeping, appreciating all the detail. Noise is...

Nikon D600

Nikon officially announced the long-rumored and much-leaked D600 a week before the Photokina trade show in September. The D600 is a full-frame DSLR aimed at enthusiasts, with a price to match. At a body only price of $2099/£1955, the 24MP D600 is...

Outstanding low and high ISO performance in both JPEG and Raw files ; High quality JPEG images at default settings ; Wide dynamic range Raw files ; Consistently pleasing metering and white balance results ; Very solid build quality and good ergonomics...

Small coverage area of AF array compared to its peers ; Slow AF in live view and video modes (but good compared to its DSLR competitors) ; Rear LCD prone to glare in bright sunlight, despite new design ; Uncompressed video output over HDMI is not full...

The Nikon D600 brings full frame functionality to the masses along with dual SD card slots and 100% viewfinder coverage. Image quality at high ISO sensitivities is outstanding and a wealth of customization options enables quick access to shooting...

Nikon D600 lives up to the hype

There's a lot to love about the company's "budget" full-frame camera.

There's a lot to like in the ; , including a great set of shooting features, comfortable and intelligent design, and excellent photo quality and performance.

Photos display some unrecoverable clipping in the highlights that you don't expect in a camera of its caliber.

The Nikon D600 is a really good camera for the money, as long as you're willing to shell out for the lenses that can do it justice.

Nikon D600

Nikon's D600 is essentially a D7000 with an FX sensor, but it lacks some of the extra features found in other full-frame D-SLR competitors like the Canon EOS 6D.

Compact, full-frame body. Excellent high-ISO quality. Uncompressed 1080p workflow possible. 5.3fps shooting.

No GPS, Wi-Fi, or PC Sync socket. Compressed control layout. Must initiate autofocus manually during video recording.

One advantage that Nikon users have over Canon shooters is lens compatibility—you can mount APS-C DX lenses on the D600 via a mode that crops the image in-camera, but Canon shooters can't move APS-C EF-S lenses to a full-frame system, the mounts are...

Camera must be set to live view and video mode to capture videos ; High Speed Continuous came up short of advertised 5.5fps ; Face detection struggled, often unable to capture image or face out of focus ; VR II auto tripod detection did not work for us...

Nikon D600: Lab Test Results & Comments

The Nikon D600 is the smallest of the company's full-format sensor cameras yet due to the same seals and protections as the Nikon D800 and its very robust body, it can be used outdoors under rugged and rainy weather conditions.

Nikon’s new entry model into the world of full-frame sensors ; Excellent image quality ; Small and compact body (compared to former full-format sensor cameras) ; Robust body ; Full HD video, including clean HDMI output

Nikon D600

Nikon carved out a new niche with the release of the Nikon D600, which targets new-to-intermediate DSLR users who want a full-frame (FX) sensor camera but don't need all the features and functions of a pro-level DSLR.

Full-frame sensor; excellent image quality; video

Price is a little high for the target market

Those issues aside, the D600 has many other things I’ve grown to love. I’ve been impressed with the quality at high ISOs and don’t hesitate to dial up to ISO 2000 when I need to keep the shutter speed fast. The placement and integration of Live View...
