Nikon D7000 review: Nikon D7000

Nikon D7000

Excellent performance for its class; great viewfinder; control locations and operations streamlined over previous Nikon dSLRs; double SDXC-compatible card slots.

No 1080/30p video.

An excellent dSLR for experienced shooters or Nikon professionals looking for a relatively cheap option, the Nikon D7000 delivers on almost all counts, including the company's best shooting design to date.

Nikon D7000

With the D7000, Nikon has created a new category in its broad DSLR line. At $1200 (body only, as of May 9, 2011; also available as a kit with an optically stabilized 18-105mm/f3.5-f5.6 lens for $1600), the D7000 offers a midrange alternative to the...

Dual SD/SDHC/SDXC card slots ; Great low-light/high-ISO performance ; Very good image and video quality ; Autofocus in video and Live View modes

Function and bracket buttons difficult to access ; Full-time autofocus in video mode needs work ; New Nikon users will face a learning curve

The D7000 is an excellent midrange digital SLR from Nikon that has a full complement of advanced and automatic features.

Nikon D7000 Review

When it was announced in September the D7000 took a lot of people by surprise. Although a D90 successor had been on the horizon for some time, what wasn't expected was how close in specification terms the new camera would turn out to be to the D300S....

Good detail and dynamic range (even better in RAW) Exceptionally low shadow noise in RAW files Arguably the best high ISO performance of any current APS-C DSLR Good build quality and handling Maximum ISO of 25,600 st full resolution 1080p HD video mode...

Tendency to overexpose in bright sunshine/high contrast situations ISO button is poorly positioned, and cannot be assigned to any other control point. Ditto white balance: poorly positioned, cannot be re-assigned Exposure mode dial slightly loose, and...

Generally camera manufacturers tend to follow a well-defined update path and it's usually pretty clear which model is meant to be replaced by a new one. With the announcement of the D7000 Nikon has - to a degree - broken with this pattern. The new...

Nikon D7000 review

When it comes to mid-to-high-end dSLRs, it takes quite a bit to float my boat these days. I'm not looking for whizzy new features, bold redesigns, or insane burst rates for either myself or the shoppers I advise; to me, the perfect camera just gets out...

Nikon D7000 Review

The Nikon D7000 is a well equipped mid-level dSLR that offers outstanding performance, features, and value. While we did have a few small grips, this camera exceeded our expectations in various areas. Read more in our Full Conclusion.

Excellent build quality ; Competitive price tag ; Robust shooting performance ; Excellent image quality from the new 16-megapixel sensor ; Almost unmatched High ISO abilities and image quality ; Fast and accurate 39-point AF system ; Nice 3.0-inch LCD...

Exposure seemed a bit strong, especially outdoors which was surprising with the new metering sensor ; Saw some Redeye with built-in flash ; Kit lens exhibits some decent distortion at the wide angle and telephoto extremes ; Falls short of Nikon's...

Nikon D7000 Review

Nikon built the D7000 using a partial magnesium shell (top and bottom) with dust and weather seals. It feels slightly less balanced in the hand than Canon's D60, but this is a minor inconvenience that most shooters won't notice.

Mode dial moves too easily; could be better balanced

Nikon D7000 DSLR Camera Review

The D7000 is Nikon's first video-capable DSLR to offer Full HD 1080p recording. This is a huge step for Nikon, although the camera still falls short when compared to the other top-level video-DSLRs on the market.

Nikon D7000 Review

The Nikon D7000 is a new prosumer DSLR camera with a 16.2-megapixel DX-format image sensor. Key highlights of the D7000 include Full 1080p HD video with full-time autofocus and manual exposure control, an ISO range of 100-25600, the widest of any Nikon...

The Nikon D7000 is a successful crossbreed of the cheaper D90 and the more expensive D300s, borrowing features from each model and adding enough new highlights to surpass them both in many ways. Just like the Canon EOS 60D, the Nikon D7000 has been...

Nikon D7000

The Nikon D7000 represents an evolution of the company's venerable D90 --the first digital SLR with movie capture capability and the first mid-rangemodel with a high-res 3.0-inch VGA LCD panel. Externally, the Nikon D7000 issimilar to its predecessor...

Very good image quality ; Better than average noise vs. detail handling at high ISOs ; Very good dynamic range in JPEGs, excellent in RAW files ; Lots of high-end features in a relatively compact body ; Attention to detail results in a great handheld...

Viewfinder not as accurate as specified (ours is also slightly tilted relative to the sensor) ; Viewfinder doesn't show ISO unless adjusting ; Auto white balance has trouble with household incandescent lighting (not unusual, unfortunately) ; No live...

As the feature set has grown, the learning curve has steepened a bit with the Nikon D7000. I recommend spending a little time with the manual to better acquaint yourself with the extensive capabilities of the D7000. It'll be rewarding, because the...

The Nikon D7000 is a mid-size, digital single lens reflex (DSLR) still camera with a full high-definition video subsystem, bright viewfinder, one-button live view, full manual control, full auto operation if you choose, dual & configurable SD card...

The Nikon D7000 is quite a camera. Gorgeous 1920 x 1080 24fps video in either MOV or H.264 format, that is clean and slick. Nikon jumped into professional quality video recording with the D3s and all of Nikon's considerable resources were brought to...

The early manufacturing runs of D7000 bodies had shooting mode dials which moved far too easily. Nikon seems to have tightened up the dial tolerance sometime during 2011, so the dial on cameras in more recent shipments no longer moves so unexpectedly,...
