Benchmark Performance: Nikon D810 review

Two years after Nikon shook up the high-end DSLR market with the 36MP D800 and D800E, it has consolidated the 800-series with the release of a new camera, the D810. The D810 replaces both previous 800-series models. Read our full review to find out how...

Nikon D810

The Nikon D810 is a high-resolution monster with incredible image quality and performance. It's expensive, but earns Editors' Choice honors.

High-resolution full-frame image sensor. 5fps burst capture. Fast 51-point autofocus system. Wide ISO range (32-51200). 1080p60 video capture. Intervalometer and time lapse functions. Sensor omits low pass filter. Dual card slots. Sharp rear LCD. Loads...

Expensive. Small Raw mode limited to 9MP. Time lapse limited to 8 hours. No integrated Wi-Fi or GPS.

The D810 doesn't include Wi-Fi or an integrated GPS. The Sony Alpha 99 is one of the few cameras in this class that has a GPS, and none of the pro models include built-in Wi-Fi. Nikon does sell the WT-5A Wireless Transmitter ($877) and UT-1...

Brilliant image quality across JPEG, RAW, and TIFF formats ; Full frame FX image sensor ; Sharper detail than many other DSLRs because Nikon removed anti-aliasing filter ; Works fast in viewfinder mode ; Very quiet operation ; 36-plus-megapixels of...

Heavy camera, especially if you make use of a telephoto lens ; Photo files are extremely large in terms of storage space, even JPEG ; High price tag ; No Wi-Fi, no GPS, no articulated LCD, no touch screen LCD ; Maximum burst rate of 5 fps at full...

The 36-megapixel Nikon D810 has some pretty big shoes to fill, replacing the much-loved D800 and D800E with a single model. Taking the best of both, this detail-devouring beauty has even greater per-pixel resolution, a wider sensitivity range, greater...

Prone to moire and false color with some subjects; No longer available with a low-pass filter; Demands excellent lenses for the best detail; White balance tends warm under tungsten lighting
