Olympus E-30 DSLR reviewed: distinctly different, but that's a good thing

Olympus E-30

The Olympus E-30 has a well-rounded feature set that should appeal both to consumers upgrading from lower-end DSLR cameras and to buyers looking for something of a more semipro caliber. The E-30 is sold as a kit ($1350 as of 7/7/09, including a...

Very impressive autofocus in daylight

Complicated customizable menus ; Unimpressive performance at high ISOs

This model packs many features and impressed us in daylight, but its high-ISO performance was unimpressive

Olympus E-30 Review

The E-30 is the long-awaited high-end enthusiast model that fills the gap in the Olympus E-Series lineup between the E-520 and the ostensibly professional level E-3. Such is the pace of change in the digital camera market that the new model leapfrogs...

Excellent out-of-camera JPEG results with good Dynamic Range, pleasing color and subtle tonality ; Bright clear viewfinder far better than most Four Thirds cameras ; Slightly improved resolution and pixel level sharpness over E-3 ; Good range of image...

Resolution not quite as good as best in class, though you won't see it in JPEGs ; Higher noise levels/noise reduction at higher sensitivities than its best competitors ; Not much highlight headroom in raw files (around half a stop) ; Unreliable auto...

The E30 takes all that's good about the Pro level E3 (build quality aside) and throws in some cool new features for good measure. It's a lovely camera and the spec is certainly impressive - as is the image quality (helped by some excellent lens...

Olympus E-30

The Olympus E-30 can produce sharp images with onboard Photoshop-esque effects, but its features don't make up for its image shortcomings.

Very sharp pictures. Fast. In-camera Photoshop-esque effects. Swiveling LCD.

Noisy at high ISOs. A bit pricey. No HDMI-out.

Olympus E-30 review

Olympus E-30

Very nice photo quality and performance; extensively customizable; flip-and-twist LCD; Art Filters are fun.

Poor My Mode custom settings implementation; without more control, Art Filters will remain a novelty for this class of camera.

A great general-purpose dSLR, the Olympus E-30 offers an attractive alternative for advanced shooters not yet wedded to a system.

Olympus E-30

In conclusion the Olympus E-30 is a great camera for users of all skill levels. A mid-rage D-SLR with the added features of photo software, the functionality of a point-and-shoot, and the high end functionality of an D-SLR, the E-30 is the best of both...

Olympus E-30 review

With the introduction of the Olympus E-30, a pro-consumer digital SLR camera becomes available by Olympus for the first time. The camera's target group are those users who don't really care for a solid housing that withstands all weather types, yet...

Olympus is fond of the limelight, and has worked on the FourThirds system for the last few years. It once started in 2003 with the E-1 and we have witnessed, in particular over the last few years, an enhanced speed of introducing innovative...

Olympus E-30 Review

First impressions of the Olympus E-30 are that it's very similar to its literally bigger brother, the E-3, with a familiar control layout. The E-30 is quite a lot smaller (141.5x107.5x75.0mm versus 142.5x116.5x74.5mm) and lighter (655g versus 810g)...

So in conclusion, while the Olympus E-30 has a lot going for it, particularly for experienced users looking for something a little different, or prospective E-3 buyers who don't need the weather-sealing, it also has some notable downsides that...

Olympus E-30 Digital Camera - First Shots - The Imaging Resource!

The Olympus E-30 single-lens reflex digital camera is aimed at what are often referred to as "prosumer" users, who lie somewhere in between the casual consumer and the professional photographer. Prosumer photographers typically seek a little more...

With dimensions of 5.6" x 4.2" x 3.0" (142 x 108 x 75mm), the Olympus E-30's body is almost identical to that of the company's existing E-3 model in terms of width and depth, but just slightly (0.3" / 10mm) less tall. The Olympus E-30's body is made of...
