Olympus Stylus 1 review

Compact cameras with fast lenses and large sensors are plentiful these days, but few of them zoom much beyond the 100mm mark. On top of that, when they are zoomed in, the lenses can get significantly slower.

The Olympus Stylus 1 has an excellent 10.7x f2.8 zoom lens, fine photo quality, and excellent shooting performance. Its touch screen and electronic viewfinder are very nice, and its features and controls give it a dSLR feel.

For its $700 price tag, pixel peepers might be disappointed with its photo quality above ISO 400. Better suited for photos than movies, and there's no external mic jack.

For those who crave an enthusiast compact with more zoom range, the Olympus Stylus 1 should be high on your list for its excellent balance of performance, design, and features.

Olympus Stylus 1

The Olympus Stylus 1 is a cross between and enthusiast compact and a superzoom that covers an impressive 28-300mm zoom range at f/2.8.

28-300mm f/2.8 zoom lens. Excellent EVF. Tilting touch-screen LCD. Good high ISO performance. 7.6fps burst shooting. Raw capture support. Wi-Fi.

Noticeable color fringing in some images. Not as wide-angle as others in its class. No mic input. Pricey.

Note - the images used in this article are of a pre-production Stylus 1 that Olympus describes as 'not cosmetically final'. This means that they may not be entirely representative of the final production camera.

iAuto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations ; Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record ; Performance is better than most compacts of the market ; Excellent overall image quality ; Outstanding low-light performance from...

Camera avoids using the flash if possible, raising ISO levels ; Higher noise than we'd like to see at ISO 1600 and above ; Weak Pop-up flash ; High price tag is not for most people

The Olympus Stylus 1 combines a fantastic feature set with excellent image quality and performance to create a compact camera that you will have to get your hands on. Although you may want to put it back down after seeing the $700 dollar price tag....

Olympus Stylus 1

An advanced point-and-shoot in an OM-D's duds.

Olympus has created a niche camera in the Stylus 1, perhaps by design. It's too big to appeal to pocketable point-and-shoot shoppers, while its sensor is too small to really please the enthusiasts it seems aimed at. The difficult question of this...

Olympus STYLUS 1

The STYLUS 1 is also very compact, and when testing it alongside rivals like Panasonic's Lumix FZ200 and Sony's RX10, I kept being surprised how much smaller it was. Unlike those two models, you really can squeeze the STYLUS 1 into a smaller coat...

Very compact body with great controls., Built-in 28-300mm f2.8 equivalent zoom., Lower noise than models with 1/2.3in sensors., Large and detailed electronic viewfinder., Tilting touchscreen display., Built-in Wifi with great smartphone control

Optics are a little soft at edges at wider focal lengths., Basic movie capabilities., No in-camera HDR or panorama modes., No focus peaking., No interval timer., Lens out-gunned by Lumix FZ200., Quality, build & movies better on Sony RX10
